Leading Stocks - Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc, FLIR Systems Inc, Cephalon Inc, Xilinx, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd

Given everything that is going on in the market, I thought it might be interesting to see what stocks are leading this year. As a starting point, I pulled the component stocks for the NASDAQ 100 (NDX) and ran them through a query that gave me the year-to-date returns and a few key pieces of sentiment data. The list below is sorted to show some of the top performing stocks. The names that stood out to me include, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (VRTX), FLIR Systems, Inc. (FLIR), Cephalon, Inc. (CEPH), Xilinx, Inc. (XLNX), and Fastenal Company (FAST). As the spreadsheet points out, these stocks all carry a rather heavy level of short interest. A high level of short interest can lead to the potential for a short squeeze.

Bellwether Breakdown - Apple Inc, Google Inc, Microsoft Corp, and General Electric Co

One of the market gauges I have been tracking is the performance of the "bellwether" names. Last month, we looked at Apple Inc (AAPL), Google Inc (GOOG), Microsoft Corp (MSFT) and General Electric Co (GE) with idea that these stocks can serve as a gauge for overall buying demand. I revisited the topic last week and saw a somewhat murky picture. Shares of Apple were holding up but the other names were struggling. The one bright spot was that all of the stocks were still above their recent lows. That situation has now deteriorated.

Apple's iPhone 3G cuts Motorola's Razr down to size to top handset sales

Apple Inc.'s iPhone 3G became the most popular handset among U. S. consumers last quarter, passing Motorola Inc.'s Razr after less than three months on the market. The iPhone 3G, which started selling on July 11 in the United States, ended the Razr's three-year reign as the No. 1 U. S. consumer handset, Port Washington, N. Y.-based research firm NPD Group said yesterday. NPD's numbers exclude purchases by companies. Apple increased sales of the touch-screen device even as total handset purchases by U. S. consumers dropped 15% to 32 million units, NPD said. The faster iPhone 3G is an update to the model Apple started selling last year. The Razr took second place last quarter, followed by Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry Curve and two LG Electronics Inc.

Stocks to Watch - Intel Corp, Google Inc, Apple Inc, Cisco Systems, First Solar Inc, Motorola, XTO Energy, EOG Resources

As we wait for the market to open, and expect to see a dramatic plunge, I have some stocks to watch. Earlier this month, we looked at some of the most oversold stocks in the market. The list was broken down 5 different ways and showed the top 15 stocks from each category. A few days later I followed up on that and found that the groups sorted by the most analysts had performed the best. My explanation was that investors might first focus on buying what they already follow when making snap decisions. I ended that post by saying this information might prove a valuable guide for short-term bounces from oversold conditions. With that in mind, I re-ran my original scan with new criteria. I kept my minimum market cap requirements but widened the Relative Strength Index (RSI).
