JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. Online TV show content is emerging as an effective way to target new-vehicle buyers, according to a survey by J. D. Power and Associates. It found that 68% of new-vehicle buyers go online to find information on television shows, and that the reach of online TV show content among new-vehicle buyers has increased by 22% since 2007. "As the automotive market struggles in the current economy, it becomes important for manufacturers and advertisers to target the diminishing number of consumers who are seeking to buy a new vehicle," said Arianne Walker, director of marketing and media research at J. D. Power and Associates. The firm forecasts that fewer than 15 million new vehicles will be sold in 2008, compared with 16.1 million last year.

Irvine-based Autobytel, which operates an online automotive marketing service, said Wednesday that it has launched a new service called Autobytel LeadCall. The new service, targeted at automotive dealers, helps dealers schedule appointments with prospects. According to Autobytel, the move will help its dealer customers by efficiently moving Internet customers into dealerships for appointments. The New York Times reports that Amazon has begun a limited testing of its new Video on Demand service, which will replace its Unbox store. The significant difference between the two is that the new service will stream movies through your browser rather than requiring you to download them and use Amazon's video player. Users will also retain access to movies and shows they're previously purchased. The service is not expected to be particularly profitable; Amazon is most likely looking to the future.
