Bezos Funds Social Networking Game Maker

Bezos Expeditions, the personal investment arm of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, has invested in a company focused on distributing games via social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. Social Gaming Network, which is based in Palo Alto, announced the Bezos deal this morning, but did not disclose financial terms of the investment. The investment from Jeff Bezos comes on top of a $15M funding round the company announced in May, from Columbia Capital, Founders Fund, Greylock Partners and Novak Biddle Venture Partners.

Jeff Bezos and Amazon Are Banking on the Games People Play (on Social Networks)

iPhone, schmy-Phone. While games and other applications developed for Apple’s iPhone have been all the rage for the last few days, there’s another sector worth keeping an eye on: social-network gaming, or games made for online platforms like Facebook, MySpace, and Bebo, which typically need to be played on a desktop or laptop. VentureBeat is reporting today that Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has invested an undisclosed amount in one of these companies: Palo Alto, CA-based Social Gaming Network, which claims 1.1 million users (mostly on Facebook).

Sony's Euro Boss Says Disc Media Will Die

Whether you like it or not, let's face it, disc media is just plain getting old. Further, "the power of the network" continues to rise and downloadable multimedia content continues to become more and more pervasive. Take a quick vitals check on companies like BlockBuster Video and you'll know why the folks at Netflix are running to head this one off at the pass as well. It's not rocket science people (actually it's called photonics, which is easily as complex), the fatter your pipe gets, the more data you can and will pump down it. Another case study of Valve's Steam game delivery, network gaming and community services, shows end user acceptance was spotty at best initially but has recently exploded with not only top title gaming content but new Cloud services as well.

MP3 Blogs Have Hipster Readers; Make For A Perfect Ad Network

Here’s a quick summary of Fortune’s look at the world of MP3 blogs: Sites like Peter Rojas’ RCRD LBL and TheFader.com attract hip readers that advertisers salivate over. But on their own, they’re too small to easily attract big advertisers. The familiar solution: an MP3 blog network. Music marketers Jon Cohen and Rob Stone of Cornerstone Promotions (which owns TheFader) have already sold Fortune 500 advertisers like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Toyota on the network, which claims 240,000 readers. That’s basically the news, and the rest reads kind of like an ad for Cohen and Stone to pitch advertisers on the notion that their network of MP3 blogs is a great place to reach the right audience.

Sony Gets Serious With Another Next-Gen Display Tech: FED, Like CRT But Really Thin

Sony is probably OLED's most vocal prophet as the TV of the future. But according to Nikkei, they're hedging their bets and getting more serious with another next-gen display tech: field emission display, which is a lot like a good ol' cathode ray tube, except that it's super thin—it has all the benefits too, like deep blacks and zero motion blur. A "dream panel" says Nikkei. Plus, they're easier to build at large sizes than OLED TVs. Sony just agreed to take over a plant run by Pioneer to begin mass production of FED panels in late 2009 after holding the tech at arm's length for years.

Message boards question AT&T Mobility's network: Carrier stands behind network performance post-iPhone launch

Apple Inc.’s 3G iPhone is making its way across the world, with reportedly more than 1 million sold in the first weekend, and AT&T Mobility spokesman Mark Siegel said the carrier couldn’t be more thrilled. However, it doesn’t look as though all AT&T Mobility customers feel the same way. Word on the street (well actually, on Internet message boards) is that the release of the latest iPhone has taken a toll on AT&T Mobility’s network. User frustrations range from signal strength and reception to slow speeds. AT&T Mobility however, said its received no complaints and stayed firm that there are no network problems.

Friendster Going Strong In Asia, Maybe Soon In Court

Dekortage writes "Remember Friendster? Long ago outrun and lapped by MySpace and Facebook, and a textbook case of social networking collapse, Friendster appears to be going strong in Asia, and has recently stolen Google's Asia chief for its new CEO. More ominously, though, a recent press release (PDF) notes that the company 'was the first social networking company to launch key features, including the social graph server, a network activities tracker, and more. Friendster has been granted three fundamental patents and has more patents pending.' Hello, lawyers!"

Genome plans to solve social networking data sync problem

Like the Internet it thrives upon, the flood of social networking sites is quickly drowning its users in friend requests, free virtual beer (sadly not virtually free beer), and links to YouTube videos stacked to the clouds. Genome is an ambitious new project that hopes to become The One Social Network to Rule Them Allâ„¢, but solving the issues of data portability and privacy ain't like dustin' crops, boy.

A social networking post aggregator

The problem with social networking is that it is so social. As you get more deeply involved with the various social networking services you'll find (or have found) that it expands your online things to-do list remarkably quickly. This is because social networking has developed so many separate and effectively isolated 'channels.' There's Twitter, Identi.ca, Friendfeed, Seesmic, Plurk, Facebook, Brightkite, Pownce, ...it's a long list that will most likely get longer.
