Online TV 'Gateway To Vehicle Buyers'

Online TV show content is emerging as an effective way to target new-vehicle buyers, according to a survey by J. D. Power and Associates. It found that 68% of new-vehicle buyers go online to find information on television shows, and that the reach of online TV show content among new-vehicle buyers has increased by 22% since 2007. "As the automotive market struggles in the current economy, it becomes important for manufacturers and advertisers to target the diminishing number of consumers who are seeking to buy a new vehicle," said Arianne Walker, director of marketing and media research at J. D. Power and Associates. The firm forecasts that fewer than 15 million new vehicles will be sold in 2008, compared with 16.1 million last year.

Online spending reaches 4.8bn in July

IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index on Wednesday showed online spending rose in July to reach a total market value of over £4.8 billion - the equivalent of £79 for every person in the UK. The Index shows that shoppers continued to spend online despite pressures on disposable income with sales rising 11.3% on June. Online retail growth draws a sharp comparison to BRC figures which showed that high street sales for July were 0.9% down on June. A wet July did not appear to curb UK shoppers as they turned to the internet to continue their spending. The rain inspired shoppers to holiday plans and new summer wardrobes which saw online sales in the clothing, footwear and accessories sector grow by 22.8% for July.

Newegg Defies New York Sales Tax Law

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit.
