Global Secure Systems (GSS), the specialist security reseller and systems integrator, has warned companies of the need to be aware of Section 6.6 of the PCI standard - which mandates the use of Web application code reviews or the installation of an application-level firewall - that comes into force at the end of June. According to David Hobson, GSS' managing director, the new requirements of the Payment Card Industry s6.6 standards should not, however, be treated as a rubber-stamp approval system for e-commerce security, but should be included in a company's overall IT security plans. The topic of information security, he said, has to be approached holistically. Companies seeking hosted e-commerce services will find many different providers and products. So, to make good purchasing decisions, business and IT managers must first establish clear goals for their online stores, Gartner said Wednesday. Once companies have identified the requirements for carrying out their e-commerce strategies, they can then properly evaluate the different SaaS (software-as-a-service) vendors and offerings on the market. Gartner is issuing this advice in the recently published study "SaaS Impact on E-Commerce" after finding that, by 2013, 90 percent of e-commerce sites will subscribe to at least one such service. At a very basic level, a company must make sure that the SaaS provider it selects offers the e-commerce capabilities the business needs, at the proper scale and level of sophistication.

EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva today announced the results of a new EU wide survey on e-commerce and cross border trade. The figures show that even though e-commerce is taking off at national level, cross-border e-commerce is failing to keep pace. From 2006 to 2008, the share of all EU consumers that have bought at least one item over the internet has increased significantly (from 27% to 33%) whilst cross border e-commerce is stable (6% to 7%). The pattern is similar for those with internet access at home - 56% of consumers with internet at home have made a purchase (in any country including their own) by e-commerce compared to 50% in 2006, while only 13% (of those with internet access at home) made a cross-border e-commerce purchase compared to 12% in 2006.

With the advent of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), encrypting stored credit card numbers is no longer optional. Any company that stores, processes, or transmits credit card information —regardless of size or volume of transactions —must encrypt stored credit card data or face serious consequences for non-compliance, including fines of up to $500,000, he loss of brand integrity, and erosion of market value. While the PCI standard offers road guidance —featuring rules on the proper use of firewalls, computer access controls, anti-virus software, and more —it s the encryption requirements that are proving to be among the most difficult or organizations to address.
