IN RESPONSE TO THE BOOKLOCKER / AMAZON ANTITRUST CASE: What self-publishing services like BookLocker need to come to terms with ... is that Amazon is a business and like any business ... must make a profit. Amazon has been accepting an influx of self-published books that don''t offer any profit. Amazon''s BookSurge (for the record) also participates in this influx ... the only difference being that BookSurge makes a profit for Amazon. Many self-publishing services offer an extremely minimal wholesale discount that (after the wholesale distribution source like Ingram takes its cut) leaves the reseller (like Amazon) with little to zero profit margin. Why would any retailer carry stock that they cannot make a profit on? BookLocker is among those self-publishing services that do not provide a reasonable wholesale discount on its books.

Amazon Updates Mechanical Turk

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, the web services subsidiary of Amazon.com, said today that it has launched a new set of tools for the firm's Amazon Mechanical Turk services. Mechanical Turk is a play on "The Turk," a late 18th century chess playing machine which turned out to be powered by a hidden operator. Amazon's service allows companies to tap human workers to get tasks done. The firm said it has added a new, web-based graphical interface for helping businesses outsource work through the service. The new interface also includes templates for different kind of work available through the service; previously, the service was only available via APIs which required programming expertise. Amazon's Mechanical Turk services are being used for such things as image tagging, filtering, and other tasks which humans do better than computers.

Everyone Loves Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)

Amazon EBS works alongside Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service to improve the ability to allocate storage volumes in cloud computing. (Anyone remember when Amazon was just an internet book seller?)

Elizabeth, What about Amazon using book sales as its loss leader? You know, where a company intentionally loses money on one or a multitude of products to lure in customers to sell others where they do make a profit? Perhaps Amazon should quit discounting books so heavily, if they are losing money--they have a choice, despite their decision not to leave POD publishers any. Why don't they stop discounting altogether if they're losing so much that we should feel sorry for them? And why can't they own up to being a book retailer and accept 40% off list like other bookstores, online or not? Why is it that Amazon's BookSurge, in two years of Amazon ownership, could not compete on a level playing field with the rest of the POD print providers?

Amazon Goes Mano-a-Mano With eBay in Online Payments Arena

Amazon has entered the alternative online payments fray with two new services -- Checkout by Amazon and Amazon Simple Pay -- that are designed to take some of the steam out of eBay's PayPal and Google's Checkout, not to mention deferred payment plans like BillMeLater. eBay, no doubt, will do its best to thwart the new competition. It's unlikely the auction giant will accept payment via Amazon.
