There are so many different Web titles, it's amazing. I've seen everything from: Webmaster, Webmistress, Web Producer, Web Designer, Web Developer, Web Architect, Web Programmer, and many more. What is your Web job title? I have been a Web Setter, a Web Manager, and a Web Writer, as well as several of the titles listed above. Right now I call myself a Web Developer, Web Designer, or Web Writer, but that could change.

geaux and other readers let us know that the new Top 500 Supercomputer list is out. The top two both break the Petaflops barrier: LANL's IBM "RoadRunner" and ORNL's Cray XT5 "Jaguar." (Contrary to our discussion a few days back, IBM's last-minute upgrade of RoadRunner salvaged the top spot for Big Blue. Kind of like bidding on eBay.) The top six all run in excess of 400 Teraflops. HP has more systems in the top 500 than IBM, reversing the order of the previous list. Both Intel and AMD issued press releases crowing over their wins, and both are correct — AMD highlights its presence in 7 of the top 10, while Intel boasts that 379 of the top 500 use their chips.

When it comes to emerging markets, there’s been a lot of talk of how the mobile web will be the dominant way that people access the internet. Now there’s evidence from Opera Software (OSL: OPERA), the browser makers, who in its October “State of the Mobile Web” report, found that the mobile web is replacing the wired web in Southeast Asia. Looking at data and metrics from its mobile browser Opera Mini, the company found that page views per user in Indonesia and the Philippines are significantly higher than the worldwide numbers. Page views in the Philippines alone grew more than 1120 percent this year. In Indonesia, each user browsed 358 pages on average in October 2008, “well above the global average”.

For this purpose, Web performance monitors let you simulate end-user activity and test your site's performance at all stages of the online experience. In general, such tools let you create monitoring scripts by simply walking through typical user activities such as putting items in a shopping cart and checking out or logging into a customer portal. While it's true that more and more phones can surf the Web, it's also true that many mobile phones have only a limited ability to show much of the Web's best content. Videos that run in Adobe Flash Players, such as those by the New York Times, CNN, and Technology Review, and Flash-heavy websites simply don't work on many phones due to the software being incompatible with hardware. Today, in an effort to bring more of the Web to mobile devices, Adobe and microchip maker ARM, which powers 90 percent of mobile phones worldwide, have announced a collaboration to ensure that Adobe's software runs well on future ARM devices.

As dynamic rich media and user-generated content enhance the user experience on the Internet, the dangerous threats facing the enterprise network are becoming equally robust. The Web is the new threat vector of choice for hackers and cybercriminals to distribute malware and perpetrate identity theft, financial fraud and corporate espionage. This problem can be organized into three categories: Malicious People, Places and Things on the Web. Dangerous people running scams and stealing identities; dangerous places appearing at the rate of one new domain each second; and dangerous things like malicious links embedded in otherwise safe, well-known Web sites. Ultimately, the gaps in today's enterprise security leave organizations vulnerable to compromise, which can be costly to fix.
