Domain names have become more than just an address on the web. Today they can make or break a business. Get a hard to remember or complex domain name, your customers won't remember it and e-mails will go missing in cyberspace. And while domain names continue to be the subject of much controversy in the technical press, what is for sure is that the number of domain names available is sure to increase. If you're in business, you just can't afford to let someone else get hold of your company name or product names.

According to USA Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the group that is responsible for managing domain names and addresses on the internet, is ready to open up domain registry for all domain names. Instead of having a limit for what addresses can be named with .net, .com, .org, etc, you can name things anything you want including .pocketnow. In the future, perhaps there will be a www.reviews.pocketnow instead of just www.pocketnow.com. Essentially, a company can use its name to replace .com at the end of an address.

I get about a thousand spam a day. Generally, I let it sit in my junk folder for a month or so and then delete it. This gives me a chance to go back and look through it if the need should arise. This time around, I had about 6 weeks worth, or roughly close to 50,000 of the unwanted email. So after receiving the upteenth Father's Day spam, I decided to compare the weeks leading up to Mother's Day with the weeks leading up to Father's Day. The reason? I just didn't recall seeing much Mother's Day spam and I was curious to see the numbers. The end result: at least in my inbox, Father's Day spam outpaced Mother's Day spam by 7:1. Even HGTV has gotten into the act, averaging 3 Father's Day solicitations for every 1 Mother's Day solicitation.

Los Angeles-based Oversee.net's SnapNames.com unit said today that the firm has renewed an exclusive agreement it has with domain registration service Register.com, where it will continue to make domain names surrendered by prior registrants on its auction platform. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. SnapNames, which was acquired by Oversee.net last year, sells expired and deleting domain names which have not been renewed by their prior owners. Register.com monitors domain names registered at the site, and when owners fail to renew them they provide them to SnapNames, which auctions them off to the highest bidder.
