Visual Studio Tools for Office 2007 How the Ribbon Helps Make Your Document a Dynamic Application: related news

Visual Studio Tools for Office 2007: How the Ribbon Helps Make Your Document a Dynamic Application

In my last article, "Using Visual Studio Tools for Office in Visual Studio 2008," you had a look at the new features of Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) that are shipped along with Visual Studio 2008. You also read a brief discussion on the previous versions of VSTO and went through a walkthrough with the new version to create an "Actions Pane." With this article, you will see a brand new feature of VSTO 2008 that allows the developer to integrate his components directly with the Ribbon interface. You will see what the Ribbon interface is all about and why it is new and special to Office 2007.

Open Office vs. MS Office - the Other Key to Windows/Linux Transition

As I have been going around alternately prodding my friends and family to try Linux, or asking them if they thought it would be possible, one thing I have heard repeatedly is that a lot of people use Microsoft Office and are concerned about their Office documents on Linux. I should also mention that a lot of them are very angry that Microsoft has changed the default document format in Office 2007 (again), such that it is incompatible with previous Office versions. Yes, of course, I know there are converters and such, but it's just one more thing for users to have to worry about - and in general they aren't confronted with it, or sometimes even aware of it, until they send a critical document to a colleague and discover that the colleague can't open it.

An Introduction to Code Snippets in Visual Studio

Sometimes it's the little things that can really make your day. That's the way I feel about Visual Studio's Code Snippets. Ever since they were introduced in Visual Studio 2005, I've wondered how I ever wrote code without them. More...

Apache Geronimo on Grails

Do you want to build your Web sites faster and cheaper, but still leverage industrial-strength technology? You can do just that using Grails and Apache Geronimo. Grails leverages the power of the dynamic language Groovy to accelerate your development. However, it runs on the Java® Virtual Machine and leverages proven Java technologies. This makes it easy to take your Grails application to the next level by deploying it to Apache Geronimo, the premiere open source Java EE V5-certified application server. In this article, you will see how easy Grails can make Web development and how easy Geronimo can make Grails deployment. You will also see how a Grails application can leverage the resources and services provided by Geronimo.

Implementing Visual and Data Mashups Online

In my previous article, "Web and Enterprise Mashups for Web Services and Data," I covered different tools for the enterprise mashup creation, including web services mashups and data aggregation mashups. I also have shown how tools such as Aqua Logic can facilitate web services mashups. These tools are geared to provide a new breed of enterprise services and to ease business application development. But, these tools do not work with some popular communication protocols, such as RSS. In this article, I will discuss online mashups, which are not yet designed for the enterprise but could lead to new and exciting online applications. This, in turn, can lead to new businesses based on the ideas or implementations that arise from these application and services.

Introducing Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Unit Testin

Unit Testing is now a fixture on the Microsoft Visual Studio landscape. Almost every type of application development has some sort of specialized Unit Testing feature built into Visual Studio. Even SQL Server database development has Unit Testing.

Open XML Format SDK

The 2007 Microsoft® Office system introduces a new file format that is based on XML called Open XML Formats. Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office Excel® 2007, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2007 all use these formats as the default file format. Open XML formats are useful for developers because they are an open standard and are based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. Microsoft provides a library for accessing these files as part of the WinFX technologies in the System.IO.Packaging namespace. The Open XML Format SDK is built on top of the System.IO.Packaging API and provides strongly typed part classes to manipulate Open XML documents.

Is open source hurt by piracy?

Sounds like what you are saying is for example, that the competition in the office suite space is Open Office Vs MS Office Vs pirated MS Office. Those willing to pirate see both Open Office and pirated MS office as "free" alternatives. If we stop piracy, then there is no longer a free MS Office alternative leading them to select Open Office instead.

UOF Vies to Be a Third Contender in ODF–OOXML Battle

Andy Updegrove writes "Long-time followers of the ODF-OOXML story will recall that there is a third editable, XML-based document format in the race to create the documentary record of history. That contender is called UOF, for Uniform Office Format, and it has been under development in China since 2002. Last summer, UOF was adopted as a Chinese National Standard, and on Friday the first complete office suite based upon UOF was released. It's called Evermore Integrated Office 2009 (EIOffice 2009 for short). How successful could this new entrant be in China? For starters, Evermore Software Co. Ltd., its developer, is reportedly the largest software vendor to the Chinese government. And then there's price: Evermore's professional edition is less than a quarter of the price of the comparable version of Office 2007.

Visual C++ Thread Debugging

The great difficulty in thread debugging is the lack of predictability and certainty in application behaviour. For a single-threaded application that is given the same application input, the behaviour will be the same for every execution, which makes tracking down unexpected behaviour quite easy. For a multi-threaded application, behaviour can be different even if user input is constant, because the order in which threads are scheduled for execution will vary each time the application is executed, potentially causing a much wider range of possible behaviours for the same input.

StreamingMedia.com Releases First Final Cut Studio Training DVD Focused Solely on Streaming Production

Final Cut Studio and Compressor are fabulous tools for producing streaming video, but the workflow can be confusing. For example, which de-interlacing option triggers Compressor’s vaunted Optical Flow technology (and which doesn’t)? How does editing in a custom Final Cut Pro setting or encoding with a QuickTime Export Component impact your options in Compressor’s Geometry Pane? Beyond workflow issues, does Compressor’s output quality match that of other Mac-encoding tools such as Sorenson Squeeze or Telestream Episode Pro, or could producers improve quality by using these third-party tools?

Microsoft Releases Pre-2007 Binary File Format Specs

An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft has released the specifications for the binary file formats used by pre-2007 Microsoft Office applications. They're accurate this time! Honest! While the documents are enormous (Word alone requires 533 pages; Excel runs over 1000 plus another 850 pages for the Office 2007 binary format), they hopefully will be useful to developers trying to create or extract information from Microsoft Office files (which despite their flaws, have been the de facto standard in many fields for some time now)."

Using Neural Networks and OLAP Tools to Make Business Decisions

Neural networks (with and without external optimization) and online analytical processing (OLAP) are two mainstream tools for the efficient discovery of valuable non-obvious information from a large collection of data. Naturally, to be efficient, the information obtained must be worth more than the cost of processing the raw data. This article will focus on some ways these tools can be used to make better business decision. You will apply neural networks and OLAP separately to several business problems using a single data set.

Office Live Workspace 1.2 improves Firefox support

Microsoft Office Live Workspace is a free online service currently in the beta phase (see our first-look post). The website allows users to upload, share, and collaborate on documents but still requires the Microsoft Office client software to perform any substantial editing. Office Live Workspace 1.2 has been recently released, and although it is a web service, the new version requires users to install an update on their computers. The Office Live Update 1.2 installer, which automatically detects and installs necessary updates on a PC, includes the following:

How Do You Deal With Sensitive Data?

imus writes "Just wondering how most IT shops secure sensitive data (customer records). Most centrally managed databases seem to be monitored and maintained very well and IT workers know when they are tampered with or when unauthorized access occurs. But what about employees who do legitimate selects from these databases and then load CSV files and other text files onto their laptops and PDAs? How are companies dealing with situations where the database is relatively secure, but end-use devices contain bits and pieces of sensitive business data, and sometimes whole segments? Does anyone use sensitive data discovery software such as Find_SSNs or Senf or other tools? Once found, how do you deal with it? Do you force encryption, delete it or prevent extracts?"
