How to Develop Web Applications with Ajax: Part 1

In the past, web applications were limited because a web page had to be reloaded (or another page loaded in its place) in order for new data to be obtained. Other methods were available (without loading another page), but the techniques weren’t well supported and had a tendency to be buggy. In recent months, a technique that had not been widely supported in the past has become available to a large number of web surfers, giving developers more freedom to develop cutting-edge web applications. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as “Ajax applications” (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be us

Web applications can look like local applications

color wheel As Web designers we spend a lot of time trying to make our designs stand out. But sometimes it's better to blend in. And with the CSS system color keywords, you can build Web applications that look like they are actually Windows or Macintosh applications. For example, when you open up Word, it doesn't open in the Microsoft color palette. All the window bars, menus, and so on are in the color palette of your machine. And to be user friendly, Web applications can do the same thing with these keywords.

Why Did Javascript/AJAX Mop the Floor With Java, Flash and Silverlight?

"".NET is Microsoft’s answer to Java: it compiles things into bytecode, it’s multi-platform, etc. Technically, many argue that it’s “Java as it should have been”. .NET isn’t free: while the virtual machine and the language itself are ECMA standards, Microsoft’s GUI libraries and other key components aren’t. This means (surprise surprise) that you can’t write a .NET program for Microsoft Windows, and run it under GNU/Linux, even though there is a .NET virtual machine for GNU/Linux (called “Mono”). If .NET is Microsoft’s answer to Java, Silverlight is Microsoft’s answer to Flash. Silverlight allows you to run .NET applications within your browser

iPhone 3G on sale tomorrow; Over 500 native apps for iPhone and iPod touch available at launch

Apple today announced that more than 500 native applications will be available on the iPhone’s App Store when Apple’s iPhone 3G goes on sale tomorrow. Apple’s iPhone provides a breakthrough mobile platform for developers, who have created an incredible array of innovative applications such as stunning action games, advanced medical applications and robust productivity tools for the enterprise. These apps will be available on Apple’s revolutionary new App Store, enabling customers to wirelessly download them directly onto their iPhones and start using them immediately. More than 125 applications are being offered to iPhone customers for free.

iPhone App Store Downloads Top 10 Million in First Weekend

Apple iPhone and iPod touch users downloaded more than 10 million applications from the new App Store since its launch late last week, according to the company. The selection of applications ranges from games to location-based social networking to medical applications to enterprise productivity tools. The company noted that more than 800 native applications are now available on the App Store, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10.

Flixwagon and Qik Offer Livestreaming From "Hacked" iPhones

Here’s a case in which you can’t help but think what would happen if the wireless industry made things easy. Both Qik and Flixwagon released applications this week that allow people to live stream video from their iPhone to the Internet (even though Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) doesn’t allow iPhone developers to create applications using the camera). Although the concept sounds pretty cool, I’m not sure what business sense this makes. The applications only work on “jailbroken,” or hacked iPhones, which means the two companies are fighting over a sliver of the overall iPhone market, which will likely hit 10 million before the end of this year. Still, these applications are good examples of what innovative things companies are trying to do, if only the handsets and processes were easier.

Facebook Connect For Mobile; Starting With iPhone

imageFacebook is planning to launch a mobile version of its Facebook Connect service this fall, starting with the iPhone because the company has been contacted by a number of developers asking for that, reports GigaOM. Other platforms will follow. “Instead of just technical protocols, the company is going to give out the entire code so people can drop it into their applications and have consistency with Facebook’s own mobile applications.” This could potentially mean that applications which are currently static will get a social aspect, and Facebook applications could maket he jump to mobile.

Tip: Troubleshooting Applications on the iPhone

As you can tell from my last post, I have downloaded six third-party applications on my iPhone that I like a lot. Most of the time, they work well, but still, they have little problems: Sometimes the New York Times app takes me back to the iPhone's home page or MLB.com At Bat 2008 just doesn't load. Here's how to troubleshoot your applications.
