Firefox Users Stay Ahead On the Update Curve

Reader Alex links to news of a study comparing the currency and patch level of various Web browsers, excerpting: "Firefox users were far and away the most likely to use the latest version, with an overwhelming 83.3 percent running an updated browser on any given day. However, despite Firefox's single click integrate auto-update functionality, 16.7 percent of Firefox users still continue to access the Web with an outdated version of the browser, researchers said. The study also revealed that the majority of Safari users (65.3) percent were likely to use the latest version of the browser between December 2007 and June 2008, after Safari version 3 became available. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Internet Explorer users ranked last in terms of safe browsing.

Use hosted email filtering for virus protection

When it comes to protecting an organization against email viruses, most companies take a two step approach. The first step involves running antivirus software directly on the email server. This software monitors inbound and outbound email and screens each message for viruses. The second part to a typical email antivirus strategy involves running antivirus software on each client machine. This software monitors the workstation's file system, but also integrates into Microsoft Outlook. The idea is that the client-level antivirus software will catch any viruses that have managed to slip past the antivirus software running on the mail server.

Peek Handheld: No Phone, No Frills, Just Email

I'm not sure if the Peek emailer is a great idea or a stupid one. Basically, the Peek is a stripped down handheld device with a QWERTY keyboard that does nothing but handle your email. The shaky logic behind the device is research that shows roughly 90% of email users are not checking their email on the go—but why they assume this group would forgo the cellphone they surely already have for yet another gadget is beyond me. Besides, the Peek is set to debut in Target on Sept 14th for $100 with T-Mobile service running $15 a month. That doesn't seem like a value to me.
