Run Windows software on Linux with Wine 1 0: related news

MontaVista Linux CGE 5.0 Complies with CGL 4.0, LSB 3.0, IPv6

MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, announced that its Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 has registered compliance with the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 specification, has earned Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0 certification, and is Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) logo certified. This achievement makes MontaVista the only Linux distribution in the world to comply with the three key requirements issued by the industry's major standards bodies, demonstrating that MontaVista Linux CGE interoperates with industry software and hardware, and meets the rigorous demands of today's carrier infrastructures.

Run Windows Apps in Linux with Wine 1.0 (LifeHacker)

Wait, before I try this, will X program run okay in Wine? Good question—luckily, there's probably an answer. The Wine AppDB lists all the programs that run and don't run under Wine, and to what degrees. You'll see rankings randing from "Platinum" (runs pretty much flawlessly) to "Bronze" (some functions may not work at all, but otherwise runs) to "Garbage" (don't bother). In general, any apps that rely on other Windows apps or functions, or interact with the Windows desktop, won't work as well, if at all. That means Adam's super-useful Texter app doesn't work in Wine, for example.

Run Windows software on Linux with Wine 1.0

For many of us, running Linux as our full-time desktop operating system sounds appealing, but there are always those one or two Windows-only programs that we simply can't do without. Sure, you can switch to Windows using a dual-boot system, or run Windows inside virtualization software such as VMware, but that means filling up your hard drive with two separate operating systems, both of which require regular maintenance. Worse, you'll still need to buy a copy of Windows.

Windows Apps on Linux the CrossOver Way

"You don't need CrossOver Linux to run Windows applications on Linux. Wine alone is enough. Wine, however, requires more technical expertise to use properly. What CrossOver gives you is an automated Windows application installation and technical support. For most users, who just want to run their Windows programs and not bother with the nuts and bolts of Wine, CrossOver Linux, which retails for $40, is worth the money. CodeWeavers also offers CrossOver Mac, which brings the same functionality to Intel-powered Macs."

MontaVista: Linux CGE complies with Telecom specifications

MontaVista announces that its Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 has registered compliance with the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux 4.0 specification, has earned Linux Standard Base 3.0 certification, and is Internet Protocol version 6 logo certified. When a company purchases a Linux operating system registered with the CGL 4.0 specification, the company is ensured of receiving all features deemed mandatory by NEPs and telecom carriers. To conform to the CGL 4.0 specification, MontaVista CGE 5.0 met all of the 129 Priority 1 requirements mandated by the Carrier Grade Workgroup of the Linux Foundation. Full Priority 1 conformance must meet requirements in seven areas, including availability, clustering, serviceability, performance, standards compliance, hardware support, and security.

Lindows: A Real Linux Desktop Alternative to Windows

IconAs a system administrator, I have used Windows on the desktop since 2.0 and used to run Windows XP at home for my family. I use Linux and Windows servers at work and prefer (Red Hat) Linux for its security, stability and usefulness in a company with a diminishing IT budget. More than a year ago I started experimenting with Linux as a desktop solution and after installing and using more than 7 different distros along with many various versions of those distros, I found a distro that is doing everything its suppose to do, right out of the box. I'm talking about the pleasantly suprising Lindows 4.0.

Will LSB 4 Standardize Linux? (InternetNews)

Not all Linux distributions are made with the same components, which can make it difficult for software developers to write applications for multiple Linux distributions. That's where the Linux Standards Base (LSB) comes into play. For years the LSB has not quite lived up to its full potential. That could all change with the upcoming LSB 4.0 release. LSB 4.0, set for release by the end of this year, could be the catalyst that enables independent software vendors, or ISVs TERM (define), to develop applications that will run on any LSB-compliant Linux distribution. If it gets adopted, LSB 4 could bring a new wave of multidistribution Linux application development.

dell x5 & linux

There might be a way to get linux on the axim. I have been searching for a few weeks and the best that I can come up with is using an X86 emulator to run DSL or Pupply linux. I was trying to get this to work on an hp ppc of mine but it looks like the compiled emulators may work on the axim's cpu and not the hp. So I have yet to test this. I do know that the same emulators have been ported to the Sony PSP. Users of this system have been able to run Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Puppy and DSL. This is the link to the PPC X86 emulators Mamaich home page. There is another option offered here Handhelds.org - Linux on Dell Axim X5. That option is to run a port of linux within the axim's default O/S. It only seems to run for about 15 min. before forcing the user to hard reset the device.

AMD's New Card Supports Linux From the Get-Go

Michael writes "Back in September AMD had announced a new ATI Linux driver as well as opening up their GPU specifications, and today they have taken an additional step to better support the Linux OS. With the just-announced Radeon HD 4850 RV770 they have provided same-day Linux support, and the Linux driver is now shipping alongside the Windows driver on their product CDs. In addition, they are encouraging their AIB partners to showcase Tux on the product packaging as a sign of Linux support. Last but certainly not least, AMD is committed from top-to-bottom product support on Linux and they will be introducing high-end features in their Linux driver such as MultiGPU CrossFire technology. Phoronix has a run-down on AMD's evolutionary leap in Linux support along with information on the open-source support for the RV770 GPU.

Wine @ Work: Running MS Office and IE on Linux

King Solomon called wine a mocker and the same can be said of Wine: The software package that runs Windows software under Linux. It mocks the way we think about platform-specific programs and applications — blurring the lines between Windows and Linux.

Linux Foundation Promises LSB4

gbjbaanb writes "Ever thought it was difficult to write software for Linux? For multiple distros? InternetNews reports that the LSB is making a push for their next release (due out later this year) that should help make all that much easier. Although the LSB has not lived up to expectations, this time around Linux has a higher profile and ISVs are more interested. This is to help persuade them to develop applications that will run on any LSB-compliant Linux distribution. If it gets adopted, LSB 4 could bring a new wave of multidistribution Linux application development. 'It is critically important for Linux to have an easy way for software developers to write to distro "N," whether it's Red Hat, Ubuntu or Novell,' [said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.

CG Linux vendor touts standards-compliance triple crown

MontaVista announced that its Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 is the first Linux distro to be certified for the Linux Foundation's (LF's) Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0, the LF's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0, and IPv6. The claimed hat trick came when it received LSB 3.0 certification this week.
