Mobile Developers Still Favor .Net and Java, But The Popularity Of Linux And Android Is Growing

One way to look into the future to see which cell phones will be popular is by figuring out what platform developers are building applications for today. Developers tend to pick platforms that are easy to work with and present the biggest market opportunity. Likewise, if developers gravitate to particular platforms, consumers will be drawn to the same ones because they’ll offer the greatest choice of applications. Today’s favorites aren’t surprising, according to Evans Data, which polled nearly 400 developers. The top phone manufacturer is Nokia (NYSE: NOK), while the top platforms, are Microsoft’s (NSDQ: MSFT) .Net and Sun Microsystem’s Java ME. This is interesting to note because the media is constantly writing about a handset war developing between RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) or Mac OS, which could indeed be brewing, but on a fairly sma

Linux kernel developers: Say no to closed-source modules

More than 135 Linux kernel developers have signed a document in protest of vendors that create closed-source code modules for the kernel, calling the practice "harmful and undesirable." The developers' statement stressed that they are speaking for themselves, and not any of their employers. Although the issue of proprietary kernel modules is not new, the matter recently came to a head, according to the developers. "We have just been receiving a constant stream of questions from companies asking how the Linux kernel developers feel about closed-source modules over the past year or so," reads an accompanying FAQ page.

Debian Maintainer Hints At September Release for Lenny

nerdyH writes "The Debian project's maintainer, Luke Claes, announced in an email Saturday that he will freeze the 'testing' or 'Lenny' tree, in preparation for a new stable release of Debian Linux in ... September! The freeze means that open source software developers have only a couple more days to package any applications that they want to be included in the next release of Debian — and by extension, in the inner sanctum source lists of distributions such as Ubuntu that are based on it. After the freeze starts next week, Debian maintainers will turn their attention to 364 release-critical bugs, and half-a-dozen high-priority goals. Given the work to be done, is September really feasible? Lenny always was a little slow getting back to his right place .

Mandriva Linux 2009 Alpha 2 Released

"Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring Alpha 2, marking the first public pre-release of the upcoming Mandriva Linux 2009. This alpha introduces several significant changes, most obviously the inclusion of KDE 4--4.1 beta 2, specifically--as the default version of KDE, and the latest development version of GNOME, 2.23.4. The kernel has also been updated to release 2.6.26rc7. We emphasize that the KDE change is a major one that is not yet entirely completed and likely to cause many bugs. As always--but more importantly than ever--we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process fr

Release Team Proposes Gnome 3.0 Plans

benuski writes "Today at GUADEC, the Gnome User and Developer European Conference, the gtk+ team announced their plans for gtk+ 3.0; immediately after, the Gnome release team announced their plans for Gnome 2.30 to be changed into Gnome 3.0. This would mean a release date a year and a half to a year in the future. Details are short at the moment, but the Gnome team seems to be following in KDE's footsteps, but hopefully will avoid the problems that plagued KDE 4.0's release."

Android developers get non response from Google

Android developers have had a lot to grumble about, and Google just added to the list. First a recap: The last official SDK most developers saw from Google was back in March, and then Google slipped up and everyone learned that only a certain few developers were privy to the latest SDK updates. And still, weeks after that, no word from Google about when the rest of the Android developer crew will get a peak at the latest iteration.

Retailers Listing Starcraft II for December 3 Release

When a game doesn't have an official release date, it's not unusual for retailers to use tentative release dates (usually plucked from thin air) for their databases. But when three different retailers all pick the same date, it may behoove us to pay attention -- Best Buy, Circuit City, and GameStop have all listed Starcraft II's release date for December 3 (via Joystiq).
