If id Software co-founder Carmack can be believed, iPhone might emerge as a major force in the mobile gaming industry and trounce many rivals. He expressed regret that his company still has not released any games for the iPhone. According to him, iPhone with it’s great graphics and a large screen can support advanced games which other portable devices can’t. He said id Software is already developing two games for iPhone, a normal mobile game and the other, an advanced game that would test iPhone’s graphic abilities. Though graphics may let down iPhone, he feels it is more powerful that Nintendo and PSP combined. Though iPhone may not be the definitive answer to mobile gaming, it sure is a great device, at least for now.

Until recently, the development of mobile-friendly websites has been regarded as nothing more than an irrelevant black art. That has since changed, thanks to more web-capable phones making their way into the mainstream (such as, of course, the iPhone). But the landslide of new and improved mobile sites has opened the doors to a sort of standard-free chaos, where almost anything (that works) goes and security is a second thought. The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) group hopes to change that, however, by launching a new initiative that focuses on mobile development without sacrificing important principles like security.

adobe-photoshop-mobile.jpgAdobe has announced plans to take its Photoshop brand to mobile phones, albeit not with image-editing software along the lines of the popular PC/Mac application. Instead, it’s planning to launch Photoshop.com Mobile in beta, allowing people to upload their cameraphone snaps to Adobe’s Photoshop.com site. Besides uploading, the app will let them see thumbnails of the photos in their online gallery, as well as browsing albums created using Adobe’s Photoshop Elements software. However, the mobile app will initially lack more advanced features like tagging, titling and captioning. However, Adobe is missing a trick by only making the beta available for Windows Mobile handsets, starting in late September with Samsung Blackjack, Motorola Q and Palm Treo phones.

alphadogg writes "A new generation of mobile Web browsers is finally making the Web a reality on handheld devices. The latest example is last week's beta launch of Opera Mobile 9.5, a native Web browser for high-end smartphones. It's an evolutionary release for the Norwegian software company, but it comes just days after Apple's iPhone 3G, with its highly capable Safari browser, went on sale. Other brand-new entrants, such as Mobile Firefox and Skyfire, are expected later this year, at least in beta form. But the evolving mobile browsers are only one part of the picture. Mobile browsing is affected by the client hardware, ranging from the processor to the kind of wireless network being used, all of which have improved markedly. It's also affected by the design of Web sites being targeted, and there's new attention being focused on optimiz

There are already a ton of free apps in the store (134 to be exact), but ad startup Medialets is hoping to increase that number by providing a platform-wide ad network so developers can easily launch ad-supported free apps. Revenue will be split between devs and Medialets, with none apparently going to Apple (MobileBurn is reporting that Medialets's CEO is buds with Jobs from the NEXT days and has the capo's blessing) . Nobody has quite figured out the mobile advertising game on a large enough scale to do anything big, and having your pretty iPhone apps marred with Busted T's creative might be less than ideal, so it will be interesting to see how many developers jump aboard.
