MS To Release Source Code to .NET Framework Libraries

One of the things my team has been working to enable has been the ability for .NET developers to download and browse the source code of the .NET Framework libraries, and to easily enable debugging support in them. Today I'm excited to announce that we'll be providing this with the .NET 3.5 and VS 2008 release later this year. We'll begin by offering the source code (with source file comments included) for the .NET Base Class Libraries, ASP.NET, Windows Forms, ADO.NET, XML, and WPF. We'll then be adding more libraries in the months ahead (including WCF, Workflow, and LINQ). The source code will be released under the Microsoft Reference License. More...

.NET TIP: Using .NET Reflector

Code written in a .NET language like C# is referred to as managed code. That is, it is not compiled into machine-specific instructions. Instead, .NET compiles into MSIL (Microsoft intermediate language). MSIL is a machine-independent instruction set that is compiled at runtime by the .NET CLR (common language runtime). A similar sequence of events takes place in the Java world, within the JVM (Java Virtual Machine). This extra compilation step is the key to .NET's success. Code executes in a protected sandbox, the managed environment of the CLR. It can provide greater security, stability, and it can run on any piece of hardware that the CLR supports, which may someday include non-Microsoft platforms. With executable programs produced by traditional languages, it can be very difficult to analyze the original source code.

We've covered console input and output, variables, conditionals, loops, arrays and collections. It's been a while (this is the sixth of nine parts), so if you need a refresher, feel free to go back to the first article to take another look at the plan. More...

Create a Sudoku Puzzle Generator using VB.NET in Visual Basic.NET

Back in 1988, a game called Tetris became a worldwide phenomenon. At the time, I programmed my own PC version of it using Turbo Pascal. Recently, a friend of mine introduced me to Sudoku. Like Tetris, this puzzle game sparked a global fervor. I could download it for free from a number of sites, but what fun would that be? Instead, the learning experience and challenge would lie in coding it myself. Join me as I show you how to roll your own Sudoku puzzle generator. More...

Toki Tori (Wii)

Based on the Game Boy Color game of the same name, Toki Tori is the titular hero's first appearance on the Wii. The essence of the game remains the same, with 80+ puzzle-based levels that require Lemmings-like resource management combined with platforming. However, now you'll be using the Wii Remote to control the main character, with support from the Nunchuk's analog stick if you need it. The exact purpose of your quest is a bit hazy your mission is clear: You'll need to help Toki Tori rescue his many siblings, still in their unhatched shells, from the clutches of some rather unsavoury critters. While the game's premise isn't unique, there's still a fun experience to be had for people of all ages and should keep most occupied for a decent amount of time.

John Carmack, the president and technical director of id Software, said in an interview that the forthcoming Rage title from the studio mostly known for Doom and Quake series would not look exceptionally good on Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console since the developers will need to use advanced compression methods to fit the game on two dual-layer DVDs. Unfortunately, Mr. Carmack did not reveal when the game is set to become available.
