Developers: Firefox 3.1 update should be 'easy'

The release of Firefox 3.0 has been a resounding success, but for some the upgrade path has been less than painless. The latest version of the open source browser differed enough from previous versions that many add-ons had to be substantially rewritten before they would work with the new release. And just when the dust appeared to be clearing, Firefox 3.1 is on the horizon.

Firefox Users Stay Ahead On the Update Curve

Reader Alex links to news of a study comparing the currency and patch level of various Web browsers, excerpting: "Firefox users were far and away the most likely to use the latest version, with an overwhelming 83.3 percent running an updated browser on any given day. However, despite Firefox's single click integrate auto-update functionality, 16.7 percent of Firefox users still continue to access the Web with an outdated version of the browser, researchers said. The study also revealed that the majority of Safari users (65.3) percent were likely to use the latest version of the browser between December 2007 and June 2008, after Safari version 3 became available. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Internet Explorer users ranked last in terms of safe browsing.

Firefox Market Share Hits 19%

Mozilla Corp. released its updated browser, Firefox 3.0, last month with a push to set a new world record for most number of downloads of a new release in a 24 hour period. Now results show that Firefox posted a 0.6% market share increase in June to 19% of the overall browser market. Safari and Opera also eked out small gains in June as well. These increases come at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer which fell to 73%. The bulk of Firefox's increase came following the June 17 release of Firefox 3.0. All three alternative browsers hit all time highs with IE hitting a corresponding record low. If these trends continue, Firefox is expected to break 20% market share this month.

Firefox Javascript Performance To Get A Shot In The Arm

If you are anything like me, then websites which make heavy use of Javascript may get slightly frustrating at times, slowing down pages that would otherwise be responsive. The good news is that Mozilla has been working on some new optimization to greatly increase the performance of Firefox's Javascript engine. The optimization tactic called 'tracing' has seen performance increases of between 20 and 40 fold in some cases, and believe the work being put down will pave the way for developers to use Javascript for writing full applications. It should also increase Firefox performance in general, as a number of components and extensions are coded in Javascript. The code should see inclusion in the next update to Firefox (3.1), and it is worth noting that Apple have also been implementing performance improvements, which are due to find their wa

Apple releases iPhone 2.0.1 update, adds "bug fixes"

Apple released iPhone version 2.0.1 update via iTunes Monday evening. The 242MB update contains various "bug fixes," according to Apple's installation note. The update "supercedes all previous versions" of iPhone software. There's no word yet if the update contains any additional features. In addition, Apple also unveiled the iPod touch 2.0.1, most likely containing similar bug fixes. As with all previous versions of the iPhone and iPod touch operating systems, the update is available through iTunes.

Apple offers iPhone 2.0.2 update via iTunes

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

iPhone Roundup: Apple Releases Software Update; Turkcell To Sell iPhone 3G in Turkey

This afternoon Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) pulled the wraps off the iPhone 2.0.2 firmware update, its latest update for the device. Aside from “bug fixes” and tangential improvements it doesn’t appear to resolve the iPhone 3G’s connectivity issues, yet some are still hopeful. The jury’s still out on whether the new device’s troubles are linked to a faulty chipset or network problems at AT&T (NYSE: T), but more importantly can it even be fixed with a software update? Details on the update are still scant at this point, but the 242 megabit update is available at iTunes for those hoping to see an end to all those dropped calls. Wishful thinking or has Apple nipped this mess in the bud?
