Basler Launches Driver Package 'pylon for Linux'

Basler presents the first Linux version of the successful pylon driver. This driver package is designed to operate with all Basler GigE Vision cameras. Because of the platform-independent design of pylon's core, all well-known elements of the Windows driver package can be found in this new Linux version as well. This includes, among others, the GigE Vision Filter Driver, the C++ camera API, and the familiar pylon viewer applications.

Linux Software is designed for GigE vision cameras.

September 29, 2008 - Including GigE Vision Filter Driver, C++ camera API, and pylon viewer applications, pylon for Linux can operate with Basler scout and Basler pilot area scan cameras as well as with Basler runner line scan camera family. Compatible with GenICam standard, it quickly separates incoming packets carrying image data from other traffic on network and makes that data available for vision applications. Driver package supports range of hardware including GigE ports on motherboard.

Board Support Package Supports Linux

VersaLogic DEV-CD-L6Targeting the AMD Geode LX-based Cougar and Python SBCs, VersaLogic’s DEV-CD-L6 quick-start board support package (BSP) uses the Debian Linux 4.0 (etch/stable) product running Linux kernel 2.6.25-5. The bootable LiveCD installs and supports Ethernet, audio, video, USB, and serial communications. The package offers 3 stable images for meeting functionality requirements. An Advanced User Package (AUP) is available containing kernel sources, a customized config file, and driver patches for running other Linux distributions.

Linux Supports More Devices Than Any Other OS

Linux Blog recommends an interview up on the O'Reilly site with Greg Kroah-Hartman, long-time Linux kernel hacker and the current Linux kernel maintainer for the USB driver core. He updates the free Linux driver program announced almost two years ago, which has really caught traction now with more than 300 developers volunteering. The interviewer begins by asking about Kroah-Hartman's claim that the Linux kernel now supports more devices than any other operating system ever has. "[One factor is] the ease of writing drivers; Linux drivers are at normally one-third smaller than Windows drivers or other operating system drivers. We have all the examples there, so it's trivial to write a new one if you have new hardware, usually because you can copy the code and go.
