Apple releases iPhone 2.1 beta to registered developers only

Apple has posted a beta of iPhone OS 2.1 to its iPhone Dev Center. The beta firmware also has a new SDK, allowing developers start working with the new functionality. However, according to several developers, only those that have paid $99 and been accepted to distribute apps can access the beta firmware and related SDK at this time.

Apple offers iPhone 2.0.2 update via iTunes

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

The iPhone Dev Team has posted its PwnageTool 2.0.1 software to jailbreak Apple, Inc.'s latest iPhone operating system 2.0. An unreleased exploit in the iPhone OS was used to allow non-Apple applications to run on Apple's iPhone and iPhone 3G. Contrary to early reports, the hack does not unlock the iPhone 3G to use carriers other than AT&T.

Rogers, Apple see big sales of iPhone

Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. sold out of its initial iPhone stock in a handful of Canadian cities over the weekend after it began selling Apple Inc.'s popular touch screen cellphone on Friday. Rogers declined to prove specific sales figures, however Apple said that more than one million iPhones were sold around the globe during the first three days of sales in 21 countries. "IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple releases iPhone 2.0.1 update, adds "bug fixes"

Apple released iPhone version 2.0.1 update via iTunes Monday evening. The 242MB update contains various "bug fixes," according to Apple's installation note. The update "supercedes all previous versions" of iPhone software. There's no word yet if the update contains any additional features. In addition, Apple also unveiled the iPod touch 2.0.1, most likely containing similar bug fixes. As with all previous versions of the iPhone and iPod touch operating systems, the update is available through iTunes.

Lines were long, though some said not as long as for the original iPhone, but the big news was all the iPhone activation problems. Apple sells out of iPhones in all but 3 locations

In less than 10 days since its problem-plagued launch, Apple has sold out of stock of iPhones in all of its stores except three, including every state except New York, California, and New Hampshire. Apple notes that on Monday none of its 137 locations in the US will have stock of the 8GB iPhone and that the only location to have the 16GB black iPhone will be its retail store in Pleasanton, California (Stoneridge Mall). The only other two stores to have stock of the iPhone are the retail locations in Salem, New Hampshire (Rockingham Park) and New York City (Fifth Avenue) -- both of which only have the 16GB white iPhone model.

"Mac clone maker Psystar plans to file its answer to Apple's copyright infringement lawsuit Tuesday as well as a countersuit of its own, alleging that Apple engages in anticompetitive business practices. Miami-based Psystar... will sue Apple under two federal laws designed to discourage monopolies and cartels, the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Clayton Antitrust Act, saying Apple's tying of the Mac OS to Apple-labeled hardware is 'an anticompetitive restraint of trade,' according to [an] attorney... Psystar is requesting that the court find Apple's EULA void, and is asking for unspecified damages."

Big Three in Talks as Apple Confirms Russian iPhone Launch for 2009

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone will become officially available in Russia in 2009, reports Prime-Tass, citing Yevgeny Butman, the chief executive of Apple's official distributor in Russia, Apple IMC, in Vedomosti. It has also been preliminarily reported that the 8 gigabyte version of the 3G iPhone, which currently retails for around US$299 in the United States, could cost up to around US$2,000 in Russia, although no official details have yet been confirmed. Each of Russia's three largest mobile operators—Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), VimpelCom and MegaFon—are in talks with Apple about selling the iPhone next year. The model has already unofficially debuted in the Russian market, with around 470,000 having been privately imported and unlocked to work on any mobile network.
