Managers should play a major role in ensuring that their companies adhere to ethical online privacy policies. Using spyware, web monitoring software or other Internet monitoring techniques to track and document the behavior of your customers needs to be managed with restraint in order to protect the privacy of individuals. If you sometimes get the feeling that you’re being watched or tracked by unknown entities, you’re not being paranoid. You’re just being observant. In fact, a variety of public and private organizations are attempting to find out all about you: what Web sites you visit and the pages you view there, what products you buy online, what your health concerns are—even what medicines you take.

ddelmonte writes "This Washington Post article examines a test conducted at UCLA. The test had two groups, young people who used the Internet, and older people who had never been online. Both groups were asked to do Internet searches and book reading tasks while their brain activity was monitored. "We found that in reading the book task, the visual cortex — the part of the brain that controls reading and language — was activated," Small said. "In doing the Internet search task, there was much greater activity, but only in the Internet-savvy group." He said it appears that people who are familiar with the Internet can engage in a much deeper level of brain activity. "There is something about Internet searching where we can gauge it to a level that we find challenging," Small said.

Consumers intend to spend less in stores this holiday season than last year, but slightly more online, according to a The Conference Board and TNS report. The Consumer Internet Barometer, a quarterly report produced by The Conference Board and TNS, surveys 10,000 households across the country and tracks who's doing what on the Internet. "Free shipping, exclusive online deals, coupons and discounts are among the incentives consumers will be expecting this season," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. The report found that bargain hunting will remain the driving force behind online sales. Online households planning to spend more than $500 in stores declined to 16 percent from 21 percent last year. Those planning to spend more than $500 online rose to 5 percent from 4 percent last season.

Privacy preserving data processing has become an important topic recently because of advances in hardware technology which have lead to widespread proliferation of demographic and sensitive data. A rudimentary way to preserve privacy is to simply hide the information in some of the sensitive fields picked by a user. However, such a method is far from satisfactory in its ability to prevent adversarial data mining. Real data records are not randomly distributed. As a result, some fields in the records may be correlated with one another. This paper studies the problem of privacy preservation against adversarial data mining, which is to hide a minimal set of entries so that the privacy of the sensitive fields are satisfactorily preserved.

Online retailers are starting to see the impact of a slow economy, according to a report released Tuesday by comScore. comScore, which measures Internet traffic and ecommerce sales, said that online spending in October of this year only grew 1 percent over last year's rates. The firm said the growth was the lowest monthly growth rate since comScore began tracking e-commerce in 2001. The report found that the softness in online retail spending was driven in a big part by negative spending growth in households earning less than $50,000. The slowdown in online spending in is huge contrast the the year-to-year changes being seen in 2007, when comScore was reporting back-to-back, double digit growth in ecommerce sales. For example, last year, comScore reported a 28% year-to-year increase in sales in August, 19% increases in September and a 19%

A few years ago, online shopping began to boom as the increasing number of broadband connections and better understanding of online security issues sent more and more people online to make purchases. Now, however, the online boom is finally starting to slow, with year-to-year growth having dipped to single digits. That's in part the result of the slowing of the economy but also a factor is a new generation of internet shoppers with expectations that are actually ahead of what some sites can deliver. Web sites’ relationship with customers has become a key part of online shopping, says a new report from eMarketer, and consumers’ expectations have risen as sites look to add features like video capabilities, 3-D displays and virtual dressing rooms.
