Working with XML Data Using LINQ, a TreeView, and a ListView :: Displaying Data

With more and more data being stored in XML, web applications today commonly need some way to view and edit the data stored in an XML file from a web page interface. If the XML data is relatively "flat" and tabular in nature, we can use data Web controls like the DataGrid, GridView, and Repeater. (See Quickly Editing XML Data for an example of editing XML data through a DataGrid control.) But what if the XML data is more hierarchical and in a less tabular format? Consider a company-wide phone book, which is recursively structured into branches and departments, subdepartments, and so forth. How can this XML data, which can have any number of nodes and any level of children, be displayed and edited through a web page? More...

Most don't know personal data can be sold

Many Californians don't understand how businesses are using and selling their personal information, according to a report released today by the Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic at UC Berkeley.

Working with the XML Data Type of SQL Server

With the growing use of XML data, the need for the coexistence of relational data and XML data is also growing. The classic approach of storing XML data as physical disk files is unsuitable and tedious in many situations. No wonder modern database engines are geared to store XML documents right along with the rest of the relational data. To that end, the XML data type introduced in SQL Server 2005 is a great addition to the database engine. Prior to SQL Server 2005, developers often used VARCHAR or TEXT column types to store XML documents and fragments. Although this approach served well as far as data storage is concerned, it proved to be poor in terms of querying and manipulating the XML data. This article will give you a jump start in using the XML data type of SQL server and will teach you how XML data can be manipulated with the help

Why personal data is now top of the agenda

Could personal data be the new black? I'm hardly a fashionista, but the issue does appear to be all over the news at present. Two reports from Precision Marketing being proof/ (1) In Sara Kimberley's article Consumer concern grows over personal data (PM May 20), Ofcom has found that 70 per cent of consumers are concerned about the amount of personal data being held by companies. As I'm in the data business, this was disconcerting news indeed. But I'd hardly had a chance to mull this over when (2) the Home Office chimed in with its mad plan to create a single, giant database of all UK citizens' phone and Internet records to use in its fight against crime and terrorism (Data chiefs slam Government data plans, PM May 21).

US Data Centers Wary of Sharing Energy Data With Feds

1sockchuck writes "The EPA has been seeking at least 100 data center operators willing to share data about their energy usage to help the government develop an Energy Star program for data centers. Thus far, only 54 data centers have signed up, which suggests that few data center operators are eager to tell the government exactly how much energy they are using. The EPA issued a report to Congress last year on data center power usage, and is already developing an Energy Star program to rate servers. Can a program designed to rank the energy efficiency of appliances and computer monitors be a useful tool in addressing the enormous energy consumption of data centers?"

Open Servers: Access Mainframe Data from Your NT and Linux server

The primary intent of the Arbutus Open Servers is to provide organizations with an alternative way to stage and access mainframe data. CPU usage costs and resource availability on the mainframe can be a concern in some organizations. Flat files can be moved to the open server with existing file transfer technology, without conversion. VSAM, DB2 and IMS data can also be extracted directly to the open server using the Arbutus technology. Once the data is staged on the server, the data access and integration capabilities of Legacy Link can then be utilized.
