Closing the Data Privacy Gap for SAP® Applications

Protecting sensitive information and ensuring data privacy have become high priorities. News headlines about the increasing frequency of stolen information and identity theft have focused awareness on privacy breaches and their consequences. In responding to these issues, data privacy regulations have been enacted around the world. Failure to ensure data privacy compliance can result in millions of dollars in financial penalties and jail time. Companies also risk losing customer loyalty and destroying brand equity. The impact is serious enough to put a company out of business.

SAP Launches EcoHub; Teams With Cisco on Data Privacy Application

SAP AG has created EcoHub, an online marketplace that is intended to ease the process by which the vendor's customers evaluate systems that complement their SAP installations. According to SAP, EcoHub offers enhanced transparency into the universe of applications that link to its software. The tool includes user feedback, ratings and demos. It addresses a wide range of certified partner offerings, including SAP extensions and applications that are rated as "powered" and "certified" by SAP Netweaver. EcoHub also covers software certified for use with applications from Business Objects, an SAP company. Users can navigate the new site by industry or application, search by key words, sort by relevance or partner, monitor "most-viewed" applications and research those that are "highest rated.

Privacy-Preserving Data Mining Using Multi-Group Randomized Response Techniques

Privacy is an important issue in data mining and knowledge discovery. This paper describes a specific privacy preserving data mining problem: Company C wants to collect data from its customers to form a data set for data mining purpose. For the data collection, C sends out a survey containing a set of questions; each customer needs to answer those questions and sends back the answers. However, because the survey contains sensitive questions, not every user feels comfortable to disclose his/her answers to those questions; how could one develop a method such that C cannot find out any customer's actual answers, while still being able to derive reasonably accurate data mining results? The paper proposes to use the randomized response techniques to conduct the data collection.

On Privacy Preservation Against Adversarial Data Mining

Privacy preserving data processing has become an important topic recently because of advances in hardware technology which have lead to widespread proliferation of demographic and sensitive data. A rudimentary way to preserve privacy is to simply hide the information in some of the sensitive fields picked by a user. However, such a method is far from satisfactory in its ability to prevent adversarial data mining. Real data records are not randomly distributed. As a result, some fields in the records may be correlated with one another. This paper studies the problem of privacy preservation against adversarial data mining, which is to hide a minimal set of entries so that the privacy of the sensitive fields are satisfactorily preserved.

Deutsche Telekom to Establish New Data Privacy Standards

Deutsche Telekom affirmed its intention to significantly improve data privacy in the interest of its customers by increasing transparency and optimizing data privacy standards. A new Data Privacy Board department will be established to send out a clear signal in terms of the significance of data protection in today’s information society. To this end, data privacy, legal affairs and compliance are to be combined and significantly reinforced as one area of responsibility.

Achieving Data Privacy in the Enterprise

In spite of a range of security technologies being deployed, devastating thefts of sensitive data continue to occur. To address these threats, many organizations are looking to deploy data privacy solutions- solutions that ensure the security of data inside the enterprise. This white paper describes the need for data privacy, and it offers an overview of the issues that must be considered and addressed when organizations look to implement a data privacy solution.

The Cost of Privacy: Destruction of Data-Mining Utility in Anonymized Data Publishing

Re-identification is a major privacy threat to public datasets containing individual records. Many privacy protection algorithms rely on generalization and suppression of "Quasi-identifier" attributes such as ZIP code and birthdate. This paper asks whether generalization and suppression of quasi-identifiers offer any benefits over trivial sanitization which simply separates quasi-identifiers from sensitive attributes. Previous work showed that k-anonymous databases can be useful for data mining, but k-anonymization does not guarantee any privacy. By contrast, they measure the tradeoff between privacy (how much can the adversary learn from the sanitized records?) and utility, measured as accuracy of data-mining algorithms executed on the same sanitized records.

Generic Data Access in XML Based Workflow Management Systems

Various kinds of data are processed in workflow management systems: from case data to control data, from internal data to access to external databases or documents exchanged in inter-organizational workflows. The paper proposes a uniform treatment of all kinds of business data in workflows. This is achieved by an abstraction mechanism which enables the transparent access to data in any source in a uniform way. The paper describes an implementation of the extendible generic data access plug-in which provides the workflow management system with updateable XML views of relational data.

Dissemination of Heterogeneous XML Data

A lot of recent research has focused on the content-based dissemination of XML data. However, due to the heterogeneous data schemas used by different data publishers even for data in the same domain, an important challenge is how to efficiently and effectively disseminate relevant data to subscribers whose subscriptions might be specified based on schemas that are different from those used by the data publishers. This paper examines the options to resolve this schema heterogeneity problem in XML data dissemination, and proposes a novel paradigm that is based on data rewriting.
