Trial over Visto patents delayed

Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry e-mail device, won a delay in a patent-infringement trial until U.S. regulators complete a review of the technology of Redwood City-based Visto. U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Everingham late Wednesday postponed a trial scheduled to begin next week in Marshall, Texas, on Visto's infringement claims against RIM. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has upheld the validity of one patent and is reviewing three other patents. Visto, whose software is used by Vodafone Group, Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel, claims Research In Motion is using its technology without a license. RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario, denies the allegations. In May RIM won a case it filed against Visto in Canada.

Full Review of the iPhone 2 On Launch Day

With the launch of Apple's brand-spanking-new 3G iPhone today, Engadget has a great review of the product and many of the prominent features. The review has quite a few good pictures and is not shy about technical details, but I guess they would know a fair bit about it, having ripped one apart yesterday. "The wireless industry is a notoriously tough nut to crack, and it's become pretty clear that the first iPhone wasn't about total domination so much as priming the market and making a good first impression with some very dissatisfied cellphone users. With the iPhone 3G, though, Apple's playing for keeps. Not only is this iPhone's Exchange enterprise support aiming straight for the heart of the business market, but the long-awaited 3rd party application support and App Store means it's no longer just a device, but a viable computing platf

Show Business: The Portfolio Review Diaries

We asked a photographer, Doug Menuez, and a gallery director, Debra Klomp Ching of Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, to keep notes of their experiences as reviewee and reviewer during Review Santa Fe, the portfolio review organized by the Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is one of the only portfolio events which uses a jury to screen applicants. This year, 95 photographers were selected to attend the review, which took place June 5 to 7.

SonoSite and GE resolve ultrasound patent lawsuit

SonoSite, Inc. (Nasdaq:SONO) has announced that a lawsuit filed against it by General Electric Company (GE) has been resolved. Following the trial court’s summary judgment rulings on July 24, 2008 the parties agreed to dismiss the remaining claims, thereby resolving the entirety of the case in the district court and negating the need for a trial. The parties have retained their rights to appeal the trial court’s decisions of last week.

Review of Mandrake Linux ProSuite Edition 9.0

IconMandrakeSoft and Pearson Education sent us over a copy of their latest "pro" edition of the popular Linux Mandrake 9.0. We already wrote a review about Linux Mandrake 9.0, so this is going to be a review of the ProSuite deal specifically and what you get for $199 USD RPP (easily found for around $175 USD in the market). Update: Apparently, StarOffice 6.0 is included in its full version with the distribution. Too bad Mandrake does such a poor job and include its RPMs along with some hundreds other demos in the two Commercial CDs, without saying a word about it (or where to find it) in the "Commercial Software Guide" booklet or another really prominent place.

Review of Sun's Free Open Source Virtual Machine

goombah99 writes "After snapping up virtualization company InnoTek at the beginning of the year, Sun has recently released VirtualBox as a fully functional and highly polished free GPL open source x86 Virtual Machine. It can host 32- or 64-bit Linux, Windows XP Vista and 98, OpenSolaris and DOS. It runs on Mac OS X, Windows, and Unix platforms. The download is just 27MB. A review of it on MacWorld, showing HD movies playing inside windows XP on a mac, demonstrates performance visually indistinguishable from VMware. Like its competition, it can run other OSes in rootless, rooted, or seamless modes display modes (where all the applications have their windows mixed at the same time). Each VM instance can only run single core (though I/O is multi-core), and it does not yet support advanced windows graphics libraries however, so some gamers ma

Apple iPod Classic Review

(Review) - Yesterday, we had the opportunity to review Apple's 3rd generation iPod Nano, and needless to say, we came away impressed with the latest carnation of the iPod family. Apple is too good at what it does, and it shows. Today, we have the iPod Classic in our lab, and unfortunately, we don't know what to write about. Yes, it's a rarity with us, considering how we love to publish our opinions, but there's nothing differentiating between the 3rd generation iPod Nano and iPod Classic. Other than the larger display, higher storage capacity and an overall increase in size, both devices are identical to one another. Of course, that's a good thing, for the most part.

RIM BlackBerry 8300 Curve Review

(Review) - Only a few short months after the launch of the BlackBerry 8800, RIM has reacted well to the demands of business users and revealed a revamped version of its highly popular smartphone, the BlackBerry 8300 Curve. Since there is little difference between the 8800 and 8300 in terms of features, we'll skip the regurgitation from our 8800 review and direct you to read all about RIM's 8000 series there. With that said, let's get started.

Briefly: review, call for iPhone/PHP developers

In brief: We have posted a review of Colin McRae Rally Mac, MacNN is seeking experienced web/Xcode developers, Adobe's Flash 2 Beta for Mac OS X undergoes a bug fix, an iPhone 3G ringtone tool debuts, and The Macintosh Business Users Society will hold a meeting in Philadelphia this month ... We have posted a review of Colin McRae Rally Mac. This game features over 30 cars and many famous scenic spots from the sport. While the game is a port of Colin McRae Rally 2005 on the PC, the game holds up well to age, with its rapid frame rate, and solid game mechanics. Despite Colin's comparably modest system requirements, which allows play on high-end PowerBook G4 or PowerMac G5 machines, it does not support the Intel integrated graphics chipsets, leaving Mac Mini and MacBook gamers out in the cold.

Google Lively Review

joc1985 writes "An objective review of Google Lively after a few hours of playing around. It seems to be a bad copy of Second Life. Somehow all the rooms are crowded, and porn has made its way in there already"
