Slump hits Hampshire against Surrey: related news

Slump hits Hampshire against Surrey

Having launched a robust response to Surrey's first innings, Hampshire squandered a position of strength with the loss of five quick wickets.

Surrey 278 & 151-7 Hampshire 227: Hampshire rally after Tremlett is laid low

Everything seemed to be stacking up against Hampshire yesterday when their first innings ended abruptly, still 51 runs shy of Surrey's first innings total. Their England fast bowler Chris Tremlett was afflicted by back spasms which prevented him from batting but, more significantly, meant he could not bowl.

Why ISPs' "Stand" Against Child Porn Is Actually Not a Stand Against Child Porn

TechDirt has an insightful article on the recent push for ISPs to turn off Usenet access under the guise of fighting child pornography. Unfortunately, the "stand against child porn" isn't actually a stand at all, it seems more like ignoring the issue while trying to snag some headlines and good will. "Taking a stand against child porn wouldn't be overly aggressively blocking access to internet destinations that may or may not have porn (and there's no review over the list to make sure that they're actually objectionable). Taking a stand against child porn would be hunting down those responsible for the child porn and making sure that they're dealt with appropriately... Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable witho

Bond holds nerve in thriller

Durham fell agonisingly short of pulling off a remarkable victory as a final-wicket stand of 57, between Steve Harmison and Mark Davies, carried them to with five runs of their target against Hampshire at Chester-le-Street. "This was a massive win for us," Hampshire captain Dimitri Mascarenhas, told the Press Association. "It would have been really tough to come back from losing that one." The last pair came together when Paul Wiseman fell to James Tomlinson and, given their respective batting averages of nine and 11, Hampshire's first Championship win of the season appeared a formality. But slowly and surely they chipped off the runs, going to lunch with 27 required, and it came down to single figures against Chris Tremlett and Shane Bond. However, in his last game for Hampshire, Bond had the final say, having Davies caught behind chasin

Hampshire defy Surrey's Saqlain Mushtaq

A see-saw match enthralled a tiny Rose Bowl crowd through to the very last over. Hampshire, set 281 to win in 75 overs by Surrey, defied the gloom and fine bowling from off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq to finish on 247 for eight.

Middlesex in the pink against Hampshire

How did it go: The men in pink came out with all guns blazing, winded Hampshire with heavy artillery fire in the first five overs. The tempo fell away, though Owais Shah and Shaun Udal cranked it up again. Kevin Pietersen hit a six and three fours, but Udal had the last laugh against his former county.

New DNA Weapon Against Avian Flu Identified

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have identified a potential new way to vaccinate against avian flu. By delivering vaccine via DNA constructed to build antigens against flu, along with a minute electric pulse, researchers have immunized experimental animals against various strains of the virus.

German Court Rules Qualcomm GSM Patent Claim Against Nokia Invalid

The German Federal Patent Court ruled today that Qualcomm’s GSM patent case against Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is invalid, Reuters reports. This is the third court to conclude that the American chipmaker’s patent claims against Nokia are “without merit,” said the Finnish handset maker. The United Kingdom High Court, and the U.S. International Trade Commission have also ruled that Qualcomm’s GSM patent claims against Nokia to be invalid. The two will meet again in German court in October, when a second Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) patent case will be heard. The news comes on the same day that Qualcomm and Nokia are to meet in a Deleware Court over its ongoing patent dispute.

Brown and Benham thwart Lancashire

Two determined 70s from Michael Brown and Chris Benham gave Hampshire a fighting chance in their match against Lancashire on the second day at Old Trafford. Lancashire resumed on 261 for 5, and Francois du Plessis' 57 - his third fifty this season - elevated his side's total to a challenging 357. Imran Tahir, the Hampshire legspinner, removed Gary Keedy to pick up his fifth wicket, but Hampshire were soon in a sticky position at 35 for 3. Saj Mahmood removed Sean Ervine in his first over - only thanks to a stunning catch from du Plessis at point - before John Crawley inexplicably left a straight one from Glen Chapple. After Michael Lumb was out for 9, Brown and Benham set about their recovery mission in contrasting styles, but put on a vital fourth-wicket stand of 139 and remain unbeaten going into the third day.

Andrew Flintoff may miss series

Andrew Flintoff looks certain to miss the rest of the npower Test series against New Zealand, but prompt treatment from Lancashire's medical staff on his side strain may have saved him from a much longer layoff. Having injured his left side bowling against Durham last week, Flintoff was ruled out of the first two Tests. It was hoped that he would return in the LV County Championship match against Yorkshire on May 30, but Lancashire do not now expect him to feature in that game, which was his last chance of proving his fitness before the final Test against New Zealand starts at Trent Bridge on June 5.

Injury rules Flintoff out of third Test

Andrew Flintoff looks likely to miss the remainder of the Test-match series against New Zealand as his side strain is not expected to have healed in time for him to prove his fitness for Lancashire before the third Test. Having injured his left side bowling for his county against Durham last Friday, Flintoff was ruled out of only the first two Tests in the hope that he would return in the championship match against Yorkshire, beginning on May 30. But Lancashire do not now expect him to feature in that game, which represented a last chance to prove his fitness before the final Test against New Zealand starts at Trent Bridge on June 5.

Old warhorses look to shine

India begin their three-Test series at a venue where they have suffered their worst loss against Sri Lanka; the last time these two sides played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, India were trounced by an innings and 77 runs. Sri Lanka have won just three of their 26 Tests against India but won the previous home series against the same opponents 2-1. They have fared much better against India at home, with just two losses in 12 Tests, and one series defeat in 1993. India have won ten Tests in all, six of them by an innings margin. One in two Tests has produced a result, and the results have often been one-sided - the smallest margin of victory has been by 149 (in terms of runs) and seven (in terms of wickets). Congress Tries To Strip Power From Anti-Wiretap Judge

palegray.net writes "Congress is attempting to strip US District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker of his power following his ruling against the government regarding immunity for telecoms in the NSA wiretapping case. Walker was appointed to the bench by President Bush, and has attempted to enforce existing prohibitions against warrantless wiretapping. From the Wired article: 'Walker, the chief judge of the Northern District of California, affirmed that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is the exclusive legal method for conducting surveillance inside the United States against suspected spies and [terrorists]. The Bush Administration argues that Congress's vote to authorize military force against Al Qaeda and the president's inherent war time powers were exceptions to the exclusivity provision.
