eBay Auctions: Going, Going...

Dave Dribin, a 34-year-old software engineer in Chicago, used to like bidding on eBay. He scouted out vintage and used goods he could scoop up cheap. But not anymore. Dribin no longer wants to waste hours tracking an auction, especially if he ends up losing out on something he wants. Instead, he just buys things retail when he shops online. "If I really want something, I'm not going to goof around [with auctions] for a small savings," he says.

Associated Press Going After Blogger for Posting Story Snippets

"Last fall, the Associated Press claimed that it was ready to change to face the new internet world -- and that meant not just being a gatekeeper, but joining in the conversation. As we noted at the time, though, AP execs said all that, only to immediately follow that up with plans that looked like it was trying to become a new type of gatekeeper. It didn't help that the company had also just sued VeriSign's Moreover division for linking to AP stories along with a title and a tiny excerpt. That sort of thing is clearly fair use -- but the AP doesn't seem to think so. And, now, it's expanding its target list. Rather than just going after the big aggregators (surprisingly, Google settled), it appears that the Associated Press is going after bloggers for merely posting a linked headline and a tiny snippet of text from the article.

Russians may not be responsible for cyberattacks on Georgia

Earlier this week, we covered a report from the Georgian Foreign Ministry, claiming that the Russian Business Network (RBN) was actively engaged in cyberwarfare against Georgia—with the blessing and backing of the Russian government. There have been no new reports from that source, but several security experts have spoken up, and raised the question of whether or not the Russian government is actually involved.

Why Linux is Not on the Desktop

"Reason #14 - "Do Something for the Environment" - I agree with most of the arguments made here. Yes, with Linux you don't have the boxes and the CDs that traditional software has. My only problem here is: Would this convince one of my non-technical acquaintances to switch? Not really. If they can help the environment, they do, but they are not going to go out of the way to switch to a whole new operating system because it's good for the planet. In other words, they are not hippies."

iPhone 3G cost could be as low as $100, but not likely

Does the iPhone 3G only cost $100 to make? Not on your life. Several sites have cited an article from EETimes, which in turn cites Portelligent, an Austin-based "teardown" analysis company that believes the iPhone 3G has a bill of materials around $100. Portelligent arrives at this conclusion based on a teardown of the original iPhone plus some speculation of what chips and components are included in the latest iPhone hardware, not on an actual teardown of the iPhone 3G. However, the mere cost of the materials used, even when accurate, is still not a good indicator of the cost to produce any manufactured device—especially not one as complex as an iPhone.

Senate Housing Bill Requires eBay, Amazon, Google, and All Credit Card Companies to Report Transactions To The Government

Washington, D.C. - Hidden deep in Senator Christopher Dodd's 630-page Senate housing legislation is a sweeping provision that affects the privacy and operation of nearly all of America's small businesses. The provision, which was added by the bill's managers without debate this week, would require the nation's payment systems to track, aggregate, and report information on nearly every electronic transaction to the federal government.

Linus on Kernel Version Numbering

walshy007 writes "In a recent thread it was asked what it would take for an 'unstable' 2.7 development tree to be created, to which Linus replied: 'Nothing. I'm not going back to the old model. The new model is so much better that it's not even worth entertaining as a theory to go back. That said, I _am_ considering changing just the numbering. Not to go back to the old model, but because a constantly increasing minor number leads to big numbers. I'm not all that thrilled with "26" as a number: it's hard to remember. I think the time-based releases (ie the "2 weeks of merge window until -rc1, followed by roughly two months of stabilization") has been so successful that I'd prefer to skip the version numbering model too. We don't do releases based on "features" any more, so why should we do version _numbering_ based on "features"?'"

Red Alert 3 Collectors Edition

Never ones to shy away from a chance to earn an extra buck or two, EA have announced they'll be releasing a "Premium Edition" of upcoming RTS Red Alert 3. Exclusive (at least in Europe) to GAME, the premium box will see the game packed in a metal tin, along with five exclusive MP/skirmish maps, a DVD with a making-of featurette (along with the sure-to-be-tasteful special "Women of Red Alert 3"), a soundtrack and, curiously, an "Exclusive Beta Key to a future C&C game!" Exclamation is theirs, not ours. The only C&C game we can think of on the horizon is Tiberium, and with that not due for a while, be sure to keep that beta key somewhere you won't forget about it.
