Ponting seeks to play Test in right spirit; Aussies head to India for series

SYDNEY, Sept 21, (AFP): Australian captain Ricky Ponting said Sunday he was hopeful next month’s four-Test cricket series with India will be played in the right spirit. The 15-man Australian squad left here late Sunday with only four players armed with Test match experience in India. The nations were embroiled in an acrimonious series in Australia this year with Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh banned for three matches for allegedly racially abusing Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds during the second Test in Sydney in January. The suspension was later overturned following an appeal hearing, but the relations between the two sides deteriorated as senior Australian batsman Matthew Hayden called Harbhajan an “obnoxious weed” on radio during the subsequent one-day series.

India, England hit by injuries ahead of cricket series

NEW DELHI: Pace bowlers Ishant Sharma of India and Ryan Sidebottom of England will miss Friday's opening match of the seven-game one-day series in Rajkot due to injuries. Sharma, 20, suffered an ankle sprain during the recent Test series against Australia and has been advised to rest for five days, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement. The lanky fast bowler was judged the man of the series for his 15 wickets as India took the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 2-0 win over Ricky Ponting's world champions on Sunday. Left-armer Sidebottom will sit out the opener due to an Achilles tendon problem picked up during England's brief tour of the West Indies earlier this month. India, Aussies cricket Test ends in draw

NEW DELHI (Agenices): The third Test between India and Australia ended in a tame draw here on Sunday but not before the host captain Anil Kumble announced his retirement from Test cricket. The Indians declared their second innings on 208-5 to set the tourists an improbable target of 245 from 23 overs. The visitors, who made 577 all out in their first innings, were 31-0 when the teams decided to call off play with 15 overs still remaining in the day.
