Panesar turns the screw to leave Smith in a hole

The chances of these South Africans pulling off the cricketing equivalent of their rugby counterparts' heroics at Carisbook are nonexistent. But if they are even to save this match they will need someone of the stature of Graeme Smith or Jacques Kallis to play a long and selfless innings at the second time of asking.

To the edge of a black hole

This close-up view here represents the immediate vicinity of the black hole, with the event horizon depicted as a black sphere. The surrounding disk of gas, represented by white and blue rings, whirls around the black hole. The white column over the pole of the black hole represents a jet of gas being ejected from the vicinity of the black hole at nearly the speed of light. NASA [View Larger Image]

Smith hundred puts Durham in charge

An unbeaten 126 from Will Smith put Durham in control at Guildford where they closed on 259 for 5, a lead of 39 over Surrey. On a gloomy day where play was interupted and finished early, Durham, three down overnight, looked in trouble on 128 for 4, but Smith and Phil Mustard (62*) put on 131 for the fifth wicket. Smith completed his hundred on the stroke of tea and even the new ball failed to make any inroads.

Sadanand Menon: Falling down the hole of art history'>Sadanand Menon: Falling down the hole of art history' border=0> Sadanand Menon: Falling down the hole of art history

A few days ago, I dozed through a rather desultory conversation, on Lok Sabha TV, between painter Krishen Khanna (83) and art critic Geeti Sen, till Krishen said something that made me sit up. It matched what I have been saying for some time. He said, "Art history does not interest anyone anymore and, what is worse, they don't even think it is important."

Pastor lists himself, family on eBay

Earlier this year, Chad Smith, a pastor from Tuscaloosa, and his wife, Marti, began looking for a non-denominational church to lead. However, Pastor Smith found that his résumé was one of hundreds that many churches were looking through. So Smith says he began praying, asking God for a novel way to get his name out there. "So I was riding my motorcycle – yes, I ride a Harley Davidson – was riding down the road, and came up with the idea of putting my wife, myself, and my kids for sale on eBay," Smith explains.

Judge Grants Medical Privacy Injunction

A federal judge in Ohio has granted a preliminary injunction against the city of Columbus, in response to a request from two dispatchers who claim that the police department's sick leave practices violate several privacy laws and the Constitution. Dispatchers Carrie Best and Cheri Bowman say that the department's paperwork procedures for absence-without-leave and sick leave put their medical information into the hands of supervisors, in violation of various federal laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act. The judge dismissed the city's defense, and concluded that both women were likely to prevail in obtaining a permanent injunction on the matter, noting that there's no compelling reason for the supervisor to have access to employees' medical information.

New "Sunglasses" Help Astronomers See Light Near Black Holes

Although we can't actually see a black hole, we can see the black hole's effect on nearby matter. But even that is difficult because infrared light from clouds of dust and gas usually pollutes the view. But astronomers have found a way to get a clean view of the disks surrounding black holes by using a polarizing filter in the infrared. This technique works in particular when the region immediately surrounding the black hole emits a small amount of scattered light. Since scattered light is polarized, astronomers can use a filter that works like polarized sunglasses on large telescopes to detect this small amount of scattered light and measure it with unprecedented accuracy. Scientists have theorized these luminous disks existed around black holes, but until now have not been able to observe them.

Man, 66, records 2 holes-in-one in same round

GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) -- For somebody who'd been playing golf 50 years and never had a hole-in-one, Bob Hickey got the hang of it quickly. The 66-year-old Grayling man used a 7-iron to card his first-ever ace Thursday on the 167-yard 10th hole at Marsh Ridge in Gaylord. Then Hickey used an 8-iron to ace the 147-yard 17th hole.

Vaughan happy to elaborate to get the best out of his players

In the battle of the captains, Michael Vaughan has taken the lead. There is one obvious reason for this; his players have performed better. But there may be more to it than that. Watching South Africa in the field, it was often tricky to tell who was their captain. The contrast with the Graeme Smith of 2003 was stark. Five years ago, Smith would leave the field with sore hands and a hoarse voice, having cajoled his men to greater efforts. Nor was he shy in having a few words with his opponents as he let one and all know who was the new man in charge of the South Africa side.
