imageCrowdFusion, the new web publishing startup founded by former Weblogs Inc CEO Brian Alvey, has received about $3 million in its first round of funding, we have learned. The new round was led by some very familiar blue-chip names: Velocity Interactive Group, the investment firm started by Jon Miller and Ross Levinsohn, Greycroft Partners, our former investors prior to our acquisition by GMG, and Marc Andreessen. The new company is an online publishing platform that will own and develop a series of vertical content sites, not very different from the Weblogs Inc-Blogsmith model that Alvey developed before, and sold to AOL (NYSE: TWX) three years ago. In fact, the new company’s COO and CMO are former Weblogs Inc employees.

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. From Newegg's letter to its customers: "After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one l

Pickens writes "City officials ordered everyone to leave New Orleans beginning Sunday morning — the first mandatory evacuation since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city three years ago — as Hurricane Gustav grew into what the city's mayor called 'the storm of the century' and moved toward the Louisiana coast. 'This is the real deal. This is not a test. For everyone thinking they can ride this storm out, I have news for you: that will be one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your life,' said New Orleans mayor, C. Ray Nagin. Already, hundreds of thousands of residents had begun streaming north from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast areas stretching from the Florida Panhandle to Houston. Bush administration officials took pains not to be caught as flatfooted as they were in Hurricane Katrina, announcing that President Bush had called

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Cricket Council has ruled itself out of hosting the proposed ICC Champions League Twenty20 Tournament. The capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was a potential venue for the proposed eight-team event, featuring the top two teams from domestic competition in Australia, England, South Africa and India. The tournament is scheduled to be held in the 10-day window between the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and India’s first Test against Australia in October. But Dilawar Mani, the president of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council, said the UAE would not be able to host the event this year as at least two venues are required. “We are happy that Abu Dhabi has been named as a potential venue for the Champions League but I am afraid the event may not come to the UAE this year,” Mani told Gulf News.

New media art is no stranger to eastern Europe and the Balkans; from the early net.art of Vuc Cosic to the collective work of Apsolutno, these regions were the proving ground for many groundbreaking experiments in media, politics, and art. So the upcoming international symposium on (New) Media Art in Museums this October in Croatia signals that the region's consideration of media art has come full circle from unknown outsiders and agitators to curated collectibles (not too dissimilar to the path traced in other regions or for other "avant-gardes"). The intersection of cultural institutions like museums with new media art continues to confound both artists and curators alike. No standard institutional model has arisen for the collecting of such work, for how to frame it in the overall programs of the museum, nor how to preserve the work.

A new way to search the web was unveiled on Sunday. The new service, called Cuil (sounds like "cool"), is the brainchild of four former Google search experts. What Cuil brings to the table is a new way to search based on each page's content instead of relying on links and traffic patterns. Cuil claims that its technology can index a greater portion of the Web far cheaper and faster than can Google. In fact, Cuil claims to have indexed 120 billion Web pages compared to the 40 billion currently indexed by Google. Another difference is that Cuil claims it has no need to store user information based on previous web searches because it focuses on content and not click history. Whether it can post a serious threat to Google remains to be seen as challenging the giant is a daunting task as even the likes of Microsoft have discovered.

this year. The average number of photos taken with a digital camera is 500, resulting in 50 billion new photos every year. If only 0,1 % of these were saved, Europeans would have over 50 million new, beautiful digital photos on their PCs every year. Usually not much is done with these beautiful photos. Almost the same is applicable for the many videos, tunes and ringtones teenagers create on their PCs themselves. From now on it is possible to get more out of these. The new website http://www.PhotoSociety.eu, introduced by internet and marketing company Senwa, gives all Europeans the opportunity to make the most of their most beautiful photos, videos and MP3 tunes.
