Last week's column focused on the best batting surfaces in ODIs; this time the attention shifts to Test venues. The general verdict from experts is that pitches all over the world have eased up in the last few years, favouring batsmen much more than they used to. England has always offered a bit to the seam and swing bowlers, but batsmen have had more than their share of success recently. The last five Tests at Lord's have all been drawn, and while the weather has had a part to play in the last two verdicts, there have still been five scores of more than 500 here since 2005. After the first day against South Africa, England seem well on their way to another big total.

As a consequence of climate change, population growth and increasing energy and agricultural demands, clean water shortages are expected to rise in coming decades. Addressing this fully requires significant research to identify new methods of water purification, with low energy demands and minimal environmental impact. However, short-term steps can be taken to start combating the problem, provided there is concerted international effort to implement policy effectively.

Previous contributors to this column have long noted the relatively low rates of publication among Philippine researchers, outside of a few pockets of excellence in a number of institutions in the country. Based on recent developments, the Philippines appears to at least be moving in the right direction, as evidenced, for instance, by the infusion of substantial R&D funds into the budget of the Department of Science and Technology. I also sense an improvement in the enthusiasm and morale of researchers I personally know — I may be wrong of course, since my observations are based on a small and probably biased sample. In any case, there is still plenty of room for improvement, and in this article I intend to explore some of the reasons for low publication rates in the
