SOA & Web Services - Business Rules Caf

One of the hardest things for most IT departments is change. Not only do they have to cope with the technology change that is inherent in their business, they have to cope with all sorts of other change - regulatory changes, business changes, competitive changes, requirement changes, process changes, policy changes. All this change creates a maintenance nightmare so that in many IT shops most of the time is spent not in building cool new applications but editing and "fixing" code in old systems. Business rules, one of the fastest-growing markets in application development technology, offers a way to stop worrying about change and learn to love it.

Climate change and species distributions

Scientists have long pointed to physical changes in the Earth and its atmosphere, such as melting polar ice caps, sea level rise and violent storms, as indicators of global climate change. But changes in climate can wreak havoc in more subtle ways, such as the loss of habitat for plant and animal species. In a series of talks at the Ecological Society of America (ESA) 93rd Annual Meeting, climate change scientists will discuss how temperature-induced habitat loss can spell disaster for many living things.

Embracing Chaos and Complexity: A Quantum Change for Public Health

Public health research and practice have been guided by a cognitive, rational paradigm where inputs produce linear, predictable changes in outputs. However, the conceptual and statistical assumptions underlying this paradigm may be flawed. In particular, this perspective does not adequately account for nonlinear and quantum influences on human behavior. We propose that health behavior change is better understood through the lens of chaos theory and complex adaptive systems. Key relevant principles include that behavior change (1) is often a quantum event; (2) can resemble a chaotic process that is sensitive to initial conditions, highly variable, and difficult to predict; and (3) occurs within a complex adaptive system with multiple components, where results are often greater than the sum of their parts.

Carbon nanotubes as molecular scales

As researchers look at smaller and smaller objects, it gets hard to measure quantities directly. To get around this, they typically measure a related quantity. One simple way to measure mass is to use a beam attached to a solid fixed substrate. When something is resting on the the beam, it will deflect and vibrate. The deflection will be related to the mass of the object resting on it, its distance from the fixed end, and the stiffness of the beam itself. Addition mass will change the frequency at which the beam vibrates as well, and the change in frequency will be directly related to the proportional change in mass.
