Match-Fixing Haunts Cricket With Samuels Ban

MUMBAI, 16 May 2008 — The shady business of match-fixing, the biggest controversy to hit cricket after the Bodyline fracas of 1932, reared its ugly head again when Marlon Samuels of the West Indies was banned by his county’s governing body for two years.

Windies Samuels faces 2-yr ban

LONDON (AFP): West Indies star Marlon Samuels faces a two-year suspension after being found guilty of corruption. The West Indies Cricket Board’s decision to ban the batsman after finding he had illegally colluded with a bookmaker was rubber-stamped at an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting on Tuesday. Samuels, 27, was allegedly caught on tape by police passing match-related information on to a bookmaker during a series in India in February last year. After the matter was picked up by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, the world governing body asked the WICB to conduct a probe under the terms of their code of conduct.

PCB to set up cricket academy

HYDERABAD (APP): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will set up cricket academy in Hyderabad to polish the young and talented cricketers belonging to Sindh. PCB Chairman, Dr. Nasim Ashraf talking to journalists during his visit to review the ongoing work at the Sanghar cricket stadium on Friday said PCB has also planned to develop 30 new stadiums with objectives to provide opportunity to cricketers to prepare themselves for national and international level cricket. He said that PCB has already executed the work of the construction of 22 cricket stadiums in different cities of the country while completion of 30 new stadiums by next year will not only groom the talented cricketers but also promote cricket in these cities. Samuels to contest two-year ban

Marlon Samuels' attorneys, QC's Churchill Neita and Delano Harrison, have indicated that they will press for a judicial review against the two-year ban imposed on their client by the West Indies Cricket Board. On May 9, a disciplinary committee deemed that Samuels had breached section C4 (clause ix) of the ICC's Code of Conduct regulations, which involves receiving money, benefit or other reward which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute.
