Air Force Suspends Cyber Command Program

AFCyber writes "The Air Force on Monday suspended all efforts related to development of a program to become the dominant service in cyberspace, according to knowledgeable sources. Top Air Force officials put a halt to all activities related to the establishment of the Cyber Command, a provisional unit that is currently part of the 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, sources told Nextgov. An internal Air Force e-mail obtained by Nextgov said, 'Transfers of manpower and resources, including activation and re-assignment of units, shall be halted.' Establishment of the Cyber Command will be delayed until new senior Air Force leaders, including Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz, sworn in today, have time to make a final decision on the scope and mission of the command.

iPhone Roundup: "Small But Enthusiastic" In India; Orange Poland Hires Actors; O2 UK Sells Out

image-- India’s “small but enthusiastic” reception: Maharajas, rich kids, and entrepreneurs: so that’s who’s buying the iPhone in India, according to a Reuters report from the front line, which found that the launch of the iconic handset in India had “none of the mass hysteria” that accompanied its debut in the US, Europe and other parts of Asia in July. Priced at $700-$800 in India, or twice the monthly salary of a white collar middle manager, the iPhone response was predicted. Still, it was an “enthusiastic reception,” and for those who can afford it, the phone gives them bragging rights in a country where mobile phones are still seen as “symbols of status and success,” and where the phone has already enjoyed a strong run in the black market.

Of 199s and 99s at Lord's

Ian Bell was the seventh man overall - but the first Englishman - to be out for 199 in a Test, during the just-completed match at Lord's. The first to suffer this fate was Pakistan's Mudassar Nazar, against India in Faisalabad in 1984-85. He was followed by Mohammad Azharuddin, for India v Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 1986-87; Matthew Elliott, for Australia v England at Headingley in 1997; Sanath Jayasuriya, for Sri Lanka v India in Colombo in 1997-98 (in the previous match he'd scored 340); Steve Waugh, for Australia v West Indies in Bridgetown in 1998-99; and Younis Khan, for Pakistan v India in Lahore in 2005-06 (in the next match he scored 194. We must also mention Zimbabwe's Andy Flower, who was left stranded on 199 not out against South Africa in Harare in 2001-02.

India new hub for patent offshoring

This means, a lot of background work for the numerous patents that are being filed by other countries, are being done out of India.

Air Force Looks To Laser-Proof Its Weapons

slugo writes "This wired.com article has probably the coolest laser destruction video you have ever seen. The video shows the Israeli and US Air Force working on laser defense systems. The US Air Force is starting to look for ways to laser-proof its bombs and missiles with spray-on coatings, no less. They think everyone is going to figure this laser thing out sometime and need a defense against what they are already very good at — shooting things out of the sky with a laser."

No iPhone Price War In India; No Visual Voicemail Or iTunes For Singapore iPhone Buyers

For two brief days, Indian iPhone fans held out hope that they might be able to get the gadget for less than the $715 price tag that Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) India put on the 8 gigabyte model, and $830 for the 16 gigabyte one. But there will be no price war, as Bharti Airtel, the other Indian carrier to sell the iPhone, released its prices today, matching Vodafone’s. As pointed out earlier, this is big money even for a professional Indian IT worker whose average salary ranges from $12,000 to $24,000. Remember, too, that there is no 3G service yet in India and the phone, the paper believes, will be locked to either the Vodafone or Airtel network.

One in two Tests has produced a result, and the results have often been one-sided - the smallest margin of victory has been by 149 (in terms of runs) and seven (in terms of wickets).
