New Zealand 266-5 England 215: Miserable England in need of Flintoff lift

The highlight of a miserable week for the England cricket team, a week that has seen the morality and ability of the one-day side questioned, took place in Brighton yesterday morning. It was the sight of a fit Andrew Flintoff (right) running up the hill at Hove and bowling for Lancashire in the LV Championship First Division match against Sussex. Flintoff has had his moments off the field but very few modern cricketers encapsulate what is meant by the "Spirit of Cricket" better than him. Flintoff plays hard but fair and it is difficult to believe England's appeal for the run out of New Zealand's Grant Elliott would have been carried out at The Oval on Wednesday had he been playing. England need Flintoff back, not just to bowl hostile overs, give the ball an almighty smack and take breathtaking catches at slip but to provide the dressing r

Whitewash looms as England target second spot

Are England really the second-best one-day team in the world? It's a preposterous notion, and yet, by the time Kevin Pietersen's men go to bed in the early hours of Thursday morning, it could well be an officially-recognised fact. Having begun the series in sixth place in the ICC rankings, England have already climbed to No. 3, and one more win will enable them to displace South Africa at No. 2 - and their unbridled dominance in the first four matches of the NatWest Series means that that prospect is very much on the cards. South Africa's ageing one-day outfit has been no match for a resurgent England, for whom the pace, aggression and enthusiasm of Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff has been the key factors. If the weather holds, it's hard to envisage anything other than another England win.

Andrew Flintoff back in the England fold

The comments of Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, that at least one of the England bowlers will be going into the opening Test against South Africa "with a cloud over him", may have had some resonance with England's attacking line-up this morning, as Flintoff was confirmed to have returned to the England fold.

England's Batting is its Biggest Weakness

England's loss to New Zealand in their 5-match bilateral ODI series has again had fans and administrators wondering why England is unable to become a force in ODI cricket. As always, it comes down to team selection. The bowling issues have largely been addressed by allowing the Test new-ball attack of Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson to open the bowling in ODIs. Stuart Broad provides good support and Graeme Swann is decent enough as an ODI spinner. It is not the world's best bowling attack by any means, but it is respectable.

Magical Monty: the England spinner takes four wickets as South Africa follow on

England should play the role of underdogs more often. Beforehand, South Africa were happy to talk up their ambitions to win their first series in England since readmission, and their opponents did not seem in any rush to demur. However their response has been like a series of heavy-weight blows to the solar plexus. South Africa are on the ropes. England have not played this well in any Test match since Duncan Fletcher left.
