Derbyshire hit back against Leics: related news

Derbyshire hit back against Leics

The bowlers of Derbyshire and Leicestershire took advantage of a helpful pitch on day two of their game.

I think it's fair to say we lacked a proven goalscorer last season, but at least we found the back of the net. The last three pre-season games have seen a goal drought of worrying proportions.

Now I realise pre-season stands for little. The results don't matter, it's the performances but when you've not scored in 3 games - two of which were against teams who we should really have hit the back against - then you start to get a bit jittery. Now, let's not get this out of context. On Friday night we had seven players missing who would be in a starting line up and shortly afterwards lost Stephen McPhee which means we effectively were playing our second string. However, that still doesn't mean we shouldn't have done better against Shrewsbury and at least scored a goal.

Why ISPs' "Stand" Against Child Porn Is Actually Not a Stand Against Child Porn

TechDirt has an insightful article on the recent push for ISPs to turn off Usenet access under the guise of fighting child pornography. Unfortunately, the "stand against child porn" isn't actually a stand at all, it seems more like ignoring the issue while trying to snag some headlines and good will. "Taking a stand against child porn wouldn't be overly aggressively blocking access to internet destinations that may or may not have porn (and there's no review over the list to make sure that they're actually objectionable). Taking a stand against child porn would be hunting down those responsible for the child porn and making sure that they're dealt with appropriately... Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable witho

Four in fight to land Twenty20 jackpot

On the way to securing the chance to win today's final and then play in the cash-rich Champions' League and the Stanford series, Essex survived the "Group of Death", aka the South Group. This supplied a trio of quarter finalists – all three of whom went on to reach the semi-finals, underlining the competitiveness of the group. They began well with a comprehensive victory over Surrey but then lost back-to-back matches to eventual group winners Middlesex. A trio of wins, which included completing the double over Surrey, got them back on track for a place in the last eight. Although they stumbled against Kent at Beckenham, a thunderous innings by Graham Napier in the next game against Sussex at Chelmsford saw Essex pass 200 for the first time since the competition began in 2003.

Rogers holds firm for Derbyshire

New Derbyshire captain Chris Rogers led from the front to build a steady reply against Middlesex at Derby. The match has benefited from a window in the wet weather and continues to be interestingly poised with Derbyshire on 128 for 3. Middlesex collected three batting points before Murali Kartik made inroads into the home side by removing Dan Birch, bowled trying to drive, and Wavell Hinds lbw pushing forward in the same over. But Rogers steadied the innings alongside Greg Smith although he was given a life on 27 when Ed Joyce dropped a catch in the gully. Plenty of Middlesex batsmen made starts, but it needed Kartik's unbeaten 33 to lift them over 300. Hinds claimed two quick wickets to stunt the middle order, removing Gareth Berg to a poor pull shot then having Dawid Malan caught at mid-on.

Asteroid Apophis may hit the Earth in 2036 - astronomer

ST. PETERSBURG. June 30 (Interfax) - The asteroid Apophis may hit planet Earth in 2036, Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute Andrei Filkenstein told the media on Monday. "Apophis will reach the orbit of geostationary satellites in 2029. It may hit Earth later, as it makes a number of revolutions," he said. "It is highly probable that the asteroid will hit the Earth in 2036 if its trajectory passes through a 1.5-kilometer 'gate'," he said. There is no way to stave off this danger so far, but scientists have suggested a number of worthy ideas, the astronomer said. te md

UCITA By the Back Door

InfoWorld's Gripelog airs a subject that should interest this community — involved as we were with efforts against UCITA back in the day. One main aim of the derailed UCITA initiative was to give software manufacturers and content owners a degree of control over users' computers. Gripelog's Ed Foster informs us that UCITA is sneaking back in, under the cover of an an anti-spyware bill, S. 1625, now making its way through the US Senate. One clause in this draft bill would legalize what the BSA calls "electronic self help" — i.e., the ability for commercial entities to cripple or disable software or networks on your computer if they believe you are violating their property rights.
