LONDON (RTRS): Organisers of next year’s ICC World Twenty20 in England said on Monday there was an unprecedented demand for tickets. Fans swamped telephone lines early on Monday for the event which will be staged next June at Lord’s, The Oval, Trent Bridge and Taunton. “We have seen an unprecedented interest in the tickets for the ICC World Twenty20,” tournament director Steve Elworthy said on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Web site (www.ecb.co.uk).

England has expressed displeasure on rescheduling of Twenty20. India has allegedly forced Twenty20 Cup Rescheduling Angers England the rescheduling. Australia and South Africa also supported the Indian move. The Twenty20 Champions League will now take place on December 3-10 in India. It was earlier scheduled in the months of November and October. The first test will be played in Ahmedabad. The test and one day series between India and UK is also scheduled during this period. The second test will be played I Mumbai after four days.

SRI Lanka's legendary former captain Arjuna Ranatungatoday urged players to preserve Test cricket in the face of the challenge posed by the lucrative Twenty20 format. Ranatunga, who led his country to their only World Cup title in 1996, also said the players needed to focus more on Tests. "You need Twenty20 to get more money, but ultimately you have to realise that Test cricket is the major thing," said Ranatunga, who is also the chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket. "It's very important to preserve Test cricket. When it comes to Twenty20, it's more like a business as far as I am concerned." His comments came a few days after his country's cricketers asked for next year's hastily-arranged Test tour of England to be rescheduled as the dates clashed with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In a statement to reporters today, Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, said that Sony is seeing little or no sign of softer demand among U.S. consumers for its range of digital TVs, cameras and computer goods despite a weakening economy. The Twenty20 game will continue to be a tremendous earnings coup for Cricket South Africa, with a projected earning of Rand 50 million from the Champions Twenty20 league. Prof Hentie van Wyk, the board's treasurer, had warned last year that the organisation was entering two lean years due to the relatively unattractive teams touring South Africa and thus earning less from television rights. The board has also announced a Rand16 million loss for the last financial year. In fact, CSA had budgeted for a loss of Rand 71 million so the loss of a quarter of that amount is actually quite a success. It is also sitting with very healthy cash reserves of Rand 154 million so it is hardly under threat financially.
