A freaky no ball and need for spikes: related news

A freaky no-ball, and need for spikes

When Irfan Pathan clubbed Mohammad Asif to long-off in the 18th over of Punjab's chase, something caught his eye as he set off for a run. After a few seconds the umpire I Shivram signaled a no-ball. Asif clearly hadn't overstepped, neither did he deliver the ball above Pathan's waist. Apparently, Pathan spotted only three fielders within the 30-yard circle - instead of the customary four - and gestured to the umpires after setting off for the run. Shivram duly deemed that an illegal delivery and an alert Pathan got his wish. The TV commentators couldn't resist taking Shivram's case and jokingly suggested that he take his shades off, that too under the floodlights.

Gartner Reveals Top 10 Technologies For Next Four Years

Dr. Jim writes "The good folks over at the Gartner Group have revealed the top 10 technologies that they believe will change the world over the next four years. The usual suspects including multi-core chips, virtualization, and cloud computing are on the list. Multicore servers and virtualization will mean that firms will need fewer boxes, and apps can be easily moved from box to box (and right out the door to an outsourced data center). Workplace social networks and cloud computing means that the need for a centralized IT department will go away. Firms will no longer need to own/maintain the boxes that they use to run their firm's apps. With no need to touch a box, there will be no need to have the IT staff co-located with the boxes."

Click to download: Online music festival footage isn't easy to come by

Last year, being a virtual festival-goer was almost as enjoyable as going to the events themselves; no £150 ticket fees, no travel palavers, no mud and no idiots in jester's hats obscuring your view; just the chance to sit in front of your computer with a nice cup of tea checking out all the best performances at your leisure. But if last weekend's big events are anything to go by, this year's online festival coverage isn't going to be nearly as much fun.

Hans Reiser Guilty of First Degree Murder

Anonymous Meoward writes "Today Hans Reiser was found guilty of first degree murder in Oakland, California. Quoting Wired: 'In a murder case with no body, no crime scene, no reliable eyewitness and virtually no physical evidence, the prosecution began the trial last November with a daunting task ahead... The turning point in the trial came when Reiser took the stand in his own defense March 3.' Whether he really did it or not, Hans basically just didn't know when to shut up."

EBay in Oz: Think of PayPal as your methadone

That’s an interesting little power play eBay is trying to pull in Australia, one U.S. sellers might want to keep an eye on. As of June 17, barring regulatory intervention, the auction giant will allow sellers to offer only two payment options — cash on delivery or PayPal, the eBay-owned online transaction service. No more direct bank deposits, no checks, no money orders. Uncharitable observers, and there are many, might suggest that eBay is abusing its dominant position in auctions to give its own payment unit a competitive advantage while happily collecting transaction fees. But no, says eBay, it’s all about the public interest — those other payment methods just aren’t safe.

No Xbox 360 spring update this year?

No Xbox 360 spring update this year? A week ago we reported about a list of features leaked to Kotaku that were supposedly part of an Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard Update. It turns out, however, that the leaked feature list is a fake as Microsoft just confirmed there’ll be no spring update for the console’s system software this year – or at least not in the form of any significant change to the dashboard. Though news will certainly come as a major disappointment to many Xbox 360 owners, Microsoft still has some modifications and general housekeeping planned for its console.
