In the past, web applications were limited because a web page had to be reloaded (or another page loaded in its place) in order for new data to be obtained. Other methods were available (without loading another page), but the techniques weren’t well supported and had a tendency to be buggy. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as “Ajax applications” (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be us

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. From Newegg's letter to its customers: "After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one l

What do black holes, magnetars and supernovae have in common? They all emit X-rays. But it's difficult, if not impossible to study certain aspects of the X-ray emissions from these powerful objects. And there's much we don't understand about how black holes distort space-time around them, or how magnetars affect their surroundings, or how cosmic rays are accelerated by shocks in supernova remnants. A proposed new NASA mission called Gravity and Extreme Magnetism (GEMS), will use a new technique to study what has been unattainable until now. GEMS won't study the X-ray emission of these objects directly, but will build up a picture indirectly by measuring the polarization of X-rays emitted from these violent regions.

Consumers have fewer concerns over packaging using nanoparticles than food utilizing the same technology, according to new study. The goal of the study from ETH Zurich's Institute for Environmental Decisions (IED), which was published in the journal Appetite, was to identify which food applications are more likely to be accepted by the public and which ones less likely. The researchers argue that it is important to take public views of nanotechnology into account at its early stage of development to avoid some of the problems that genetically modified (GM) technology has been faced with. They claim that their findings can help identify the food applications for which future public debates on nanotechnology could focus on.

color wheel As Web designers we spend a lot of time trying to make our designs stand out. But sometimes it's better to blend in. And with the CSS system color keywords, you can build Web applications that look like they are actually Windows or Macintosh applications. For example, when you open up Word, it doesn't open in the Microsoft color palette. All the window bars, menus, and so on are in the color palette of your machine. And to be user friendly, Web applications can do the same thing with these keywords.
