Introduction to IP Storage: Overview, Methods and Advantages of the iSCSI (Internet SCSI) Protocol

iSCSI, the acronym for Internet SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), is an Internet Protocol (IP) - based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Designed to carry SCSI commands over IP networks, iSCSI is used to facilitate data transfer over networks and manage storage needs over long distances. The iSCSI protocol is one of the key technologies expected to continue to push the rapid development of the Storage Area Network (SAN) market, by increasing the capabilities and performance of storage data transmission, while contributing to the declining cost and expense of storage technologies. Previously, SAN implementations required Fibre Channel (FC) technology and its costly infrastructure of training, support, and proprietary components.

The Inside Story On the San Francisco Network Hijacking

snydeq writes "A source with direct knowledge of San Francisco's IT infrastructure has tipped off Paul Venezia to the real story behind Terry Childs' lockout of San Francisco's network, providing a detailed account of the city's FiberWAN, interdepartmental politics, and Terry Childs himself. Childs pleaded not guilty to charges of tampering yesterday and is being held on $5 million bail. According to the source, Childs' purview was limited to the city's FiberWAN — a network he himself built and, believing no one competent enough to touch the network but himself, guarded religiously, sharing details with no one, including routing configuration and log-in information. Childs was so concerned about the network's security that he refused even to write router and switch configurations to flash.

San Francisco Network Hacked by a Childs

According to various sources, including the San Francisco Chronicle, a soon-to-be former network admin has locked everyon out of the San Francisco "FiberWAN" network. From the article, "records such as officials' e-mails, city payroll files, confidential law enforcement documents and jail inmates' bookings" are stored on this network. Terry Childs is currently in jail on $5 million bail.

Milpitas May Make Use Of Old Earthlink Wi-Fi Network - Google to recreate Mountain View network in Milpitas

Milpitas, California is one of those small cities that was excited to get a citywide wireless network from Earthlink a couple of years back and then had to agree to a return of the network when Earthlink’s plans collapsed earlier this year. When the city accepted the network back, its plan was to use it solely as a municipal network. However, a new agreement is pending which would once again offer free wi-fi to about 7000 users per month. The agreement would allow for the formation of a collaborative group called Silicon Valley Unwired which includes the city, Google and I-Net Solutions (the group that provides Wi-Fi for Mountain View in cooperation with Google). This non-profit group would work together to offer the network’s service at no additional cost to the city using the infrastructure put into place by Earthlink.

Nintendo Investigating Holographic Storage

If a recent patent filing is indicative of Nintendo's near-future plans, a truly remarkable solution to the Wii's storage problem could be on the way. The patent, filed in conjunction with Inphase Technologies, is for a holographic storage system that could revolutionize console data storage. Holographic storage works by splitting a laser into two beams - the signal beam, and the reference beam. The signal beam has data encoded onto it by a light modulator, and is then reunited with the reference beam; the combined beams then write the data to a photosensitive material - and the data is stored! The beams read and write at specific light angles, wavelengths, and positions, which essentially make up the data's physical address on the storage medium.
