Spammers Switch from Remedies to Replicas Switch from health and remedy spam to product spam reflects spam market’s growing sophistication and maturity ATLANTA (May 15, 2008) – Spam promoting replica watches, pens and cheap jewelry has taken over from spam pushing male enlargement and sexual performance pills as the leading items for sale by spammers, according to new data released by Marshal’s TRACE security team. This breaks a two-year reign of health-related spam, which previously accounted for 75-80 percent of all spam in circulation based on Marshal’s statistics. According to Marshal’s TRACE team, the trend towards product spam rather than health or remedy spam reflects the increased sophistication and maturity of the spam market. “Health spam has accounted for the vast majority of spam since we started keeping records about its co

mcafee-spam-experiment.jpgYou don't have to be a member of Mensa to predict if you go around asking for spam you'll get it. But that's exactly what security firm McAfee did with its Spam Experiment conducted in April. The test asked 50 people from ten countries to defy common sense and for 30 days surf the Web on a computer with no anti-spam software. Participants were encouraged "to go where most Internet users would not dare" in an effort to see what would happen. Guess what, they were spammed.

I get about a thousand spam a day. Generally, I let it sit in my junk folder for a month or so and then delete it. This gives me a chance to go back and look through it if the need should arise. This time around, I had about 6 weeks worth, or roughly close to 50,000 of the unwanted email. So after receiving the upteenth Father's Day spam, I decided to compare the weeks leading up to Mother's Day with the weeks leading up to Father's Day. The reason? I just didn't recall seeing much Mother's Day spam and I was curious to see the numbers. The end result: at least in my inbox, Father's Day spam outpaced Mother's Day spam by 7:1. Even HGTV has gotten into the act, averaging 3 Father's Day solicitations for every 1 Mother's Day solicitation.

MessageLabs today announced the results of its Intelligence Report for May 2008. Analysis highlights that spam levels are back on the increase with levels reaching 76.8 percent of all e-mails in May, heights not experienced since early 2007. The rise in spam, according to MessageLabs, is due to the change of tactics adopted by the spammers this month, moving further away from reliance on new and undetectable e-mail attachments and moving toward the exploitation of free, mainstream hosted services such as Google Docs and Calendar and Microsoft SkyDrive.

India’s space agency sent a record 10 satellites into Earth orbit with a single launch early Monday. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket ejected all the satellites within minutes of each other after liftoff from the Sriharikota space station in southern India. Initial signals indicated all the satellites were working normally. India is seeking to compete with other space-faring nations for commercial launch services, and this mission's success demonstrates India's ability to launch multiple payloads into precise orbit. The flight breaks the previous record of eight satellites launched at once by a Russian rocket, according to Indian news reports.

MySpace won the largest CAN-SPAM judgment in US history this week when the defendants failed to show up in court. The US District Court for the Central District of California made a default judgment against Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines for using MySpace to send more than 700,000 spam messages to users of the popular social networking service. The result is $234 million in damages for MySpace—assuming, of course, that Wallace and Rines can be tracked down and forced to pay up.
