SanDisk WORM secure memory card

July 17, 2008 When sensitive data is stored digitally, the trade-off is sometimes seen as extending the life-span of the record, while potentially losing the ability to detect alterations of the files. For example, errors that occur in electronic voting systems, (and there are oh so many of them), are near undetectable without a paper ballot record to check the results against. In order to bring both security and longevity to data storage, SanDisk has announced the SDTM WORM (Write Once Read Many) Card, a digital memory drive that preserves important data for up to 100 years, and prohibits alteration or deletion.

SanDisk Sansa e270 6GB MP3 Player

(Review) - SanDisk’s e series of music players might not be iPod Nano killers, but they are the closest to dominating the industry. SanDisk made a bold move earlier this year in January when it showcased its line of flash MP3 players at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. If Sony, Creative and a number of other copycats couldn’t sustain their market share, how could SanDisk possibly win a losing battle? Now, 11 months after the introduction of a brand new product line, SanDisk is well positioned and a relatively serious threat to the Nano.

Open Source Cards Project Meets Objections

An attempt to create an open-source set of public safety protocol cards has run into a legal setback after a commercial company issued an Internet cease-and-desist order that claimed copyright infringement. The cards were developed by the Open ISES Project, which has also developed an open-source CAD software application, and posted on-line just last March. However, last week the group says it received a letter from attorneys representing Medical Priority Consultants, who apparently stated that the open source cards infringed on the company's copyrights. In response, the Project took down the cards, and issued a statement explaining their actions. "We are hoping that we can work out an agreement with them. However, until such time, we had to take the site and associated files down," said Robert Austin, who manages the Project.

Palm SDHC beta available

PalmPowerups reports good news for many Palm users. Treo and Centro users can already access SDHC cards allowing storage all the way to 32GB currently. However, other Palm users have been left out in the cold since the Palm OS for those devices has been limited to SD cards only. And that means 2GB maximums. PalmPowerups has released a free beta driver to allow these Palm devices to access SDHC cards. In addition to the ability to use larger memory cards, users will experience faster access, and card access will not shut off in low battery conditions.

New Wii Disc Dumper Copies Games to SD Cards

The first Wii Disc Dumper required a PC and 50 hours of backup time. The latest v1.2 by nitrotux requires only a Wii loaded with an SD card to make backups of single and dual layer Wii titles as well as GameCube games. The only catch is that the Wii needs to be rebooted during the process quite a few times (3 for SL DVD, 6 for DL DVD and 1 for a GameCube disc). So while the process won't take 50 hours, it's not exactly an instantaneous, one-step backup, either. [El Otralado via Maxconsole]

Photos: Panasonic's HDC-SD9, as simple as ABC(NET)

FYI, the name game can be a confusing one in the gadget world. HDD -- hard disk drive -- and HD -- high definition -- are easily mixed up. SD cards and SD -- standard definition -- are even worse. Panasonic has only gone and launched an HD camcorder with both 'HD' and 'SD' in its name: the Panasonic HDC-SD9. Not to be confused with a space station sitting on the edge of a wormhole -- that's DS9 -- the SD9 is one of the smallest 1,920x1,080-pixel shooters going.
