Ask Lt. Col. John Bircher About Cyber Warfare Concepts

The Air Force is not the only U.S. military branch trying to come to grips with the electronic side of warfare, both current and future. The U.S. Army Computer Network Operations (CNO)-Electronic Warfare (EW) Proponent (USACEWP), located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas — home to the U.S. Army's Combined Arms Center — serves as the Army's hub for cyber-electronic concepts and capabilities. This is the organization responsible for developing doctrine, materiel and training to prepare the Army for cyber-electronic engagements. For example, USACEWP has developed training teams to ensure that U.S. commanders and soldiers around the world are fully informed of cyber-electronic capabilities at their disposal. Leading the Proponent's Futures branch is Lt.

Cyber Attacks Prove Korea Needs a Cure for Its Antiviru...

When the word "terrorist" is usually used in a conversation, the image that comes to mind is men in ski masks toting AK-47s, angrily shouting slogans or making demands. However, the image of a terrorist in East Asia is rapidly changing. While elsewhere in the World, bombs and guns are still the terrorists' weapons of choice, Oriental terroristsfind that arsenal somewhat passe. The new tool of the terrorist is the keyboard and their favored medium is the Internet. These are the years of the "cyber terrorist". Last month, Korea was ravaged by two of the biggest cases of so-called "cyber terrorism" in history.

Flexsys Files Patent-Infringement Complaint With U.S. International Trade Commission Against Sinorgchem, KKPC and Kumho Tire ST. LOUIS, May 12, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Flexsys America L.P., a subsidiary of Solutia Inc. (NYSE:SOA), today announced it has filed a new complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against Sinorgchem Co., Shandong; Korea Kumho Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (KKPC); Kumho Tire Co., Inc.; and Kumho Tire USA, Inc. This complaint asserts that the importation of Sinorgchem's 4-ADPA or any antidegradants made from its 4-ADPA into the United States violates section 337 of the U.S. Tariff Act, due to Sinorgchem's infringement upon Flexsys' patents for the production of 4-ADPA and its intermediates. "Flexsys invests significantly in the discovery, development and commercialization of manufacturing processes fo

Google Finance to add more data to fight Yahoo, AOL

Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. Adding features such as up-to-the-minute stock quotes will help Google lure more visitors that may then visit the company's other sites, sai

New international group to become the CDC of cyber security

Next week, the biannual World Congress of IT (WCIT) will be the venue for the launch of a new initiative from an organization that aims to become a platform for international cooperation on cyber security. The group calls itself the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber-Terrorism (IMPACT), and its advisory board features tech luminaries like Google's Vint Cerf and Symantec CEO John Thompson. The group's forthcoming World Cyber Security Summit (WCSS), which will be part of the WCIT 2008, is an effort to raise IMPACT's profile as an international platform for responding to and containing cyber attacks.

Targeted Cyber Attacks

Cyber attack is the name given by (usually sensationalist) articles and documents describing crimes that occur in a virtual world as opposed to tangible attacks such as war. A targeted cyber attack is when the attacker specifically targets someone or a company. A successful attack will typically allow the attacker to gain access to the victim's assets, allowing stealing of sensitive internal data and possibly cause disruption and denial of service in some cases. One example of a targeted cyber attack is an attack in an industrial espionage case where documents were stolen by penetrating a victim's database server. Another example can be the actions of a jealous boyfriend spying on his girlfriend's online activities by hacking into her instant messenger or email account.

Why ISPs' "Stand" Against Child Porn Is Actually Not a Stand Against Child Porn

TechDirt has an insightful article on the recent push for ISPs to turn off Usenet access under the guise of fighting child pornography. Unfortunately, the "stand against child porn" isn't actually a stand at all, it seems more like ignoring the issue while trying to snag some headlines and good will. "Taking a stand against child porn wouldn't be overly aggressively blocking access to internet destinations that may or may not have porn (and there's no review over the list to make sure that they're actually objectionable). Taking a stand against child porn would be hunting down those responsible for the child porn and making sure that they're dealt with appropriately... Also, this sets an awful precedent in that the ISPs can point out that it's ok for them to block "objectionable" content where they get to define what's objectionable witho

Rapid tooling: EOS claims patent infringement against MCP

EOS GmbH (Electro Optical Systems; Krailling, Germany) has filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against MCP Tooling Technologies Ltd. and MCP-HEK Tooling GmbH. Specifying U.S. Patent No. 5,753,171 in the U.S. District Court in South Carolina, EOS says that MCP has violated an agreement reached with it and Swiss laser-specialist Trumpf, whereby MCP received a license for certain EOS patents, as well as some patent rights from Trumpf covering laser sintering. That license did not, however, extend to the U.S. and Canada. EOS filed the suit on May 8 after MCP announced that its Realizer product would be distributed in the U.S.

The Internet move is an unusual one in American politics, where candida
