VMware Introduces New Virtualization Infrastructure Toolkit

VMware announced the general availability of the VMware Infrastructure (VI) Toolkit (for Windows), a new addition to its scripting toolkit portfolio that enhances automation of virtual datacenters. Offered free of charge, the toolkit is an easy-to-use scripting interface for administrators who need to manage multiple VMware ESX hypervisors or VMware VirtualCenter instances. Based on the popular Microsoft PowerShell scripting language, it provides a familiar interface that lets administrators automate repetitive tasks such as cloning, moving, starting or stopping virtual machines and hosts in a VMware Infrastructure environment.

McAfee (MFE) NewsBite - McAfee Reports Stronger-Than-Expected Earnings

McAfee Inc. (MFE) opened at 34.60. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 34.29 and a high of 35.00. MFE is now trading at 34.81, up 2.06 (5.95%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 41.66 in October and set its 52 week low of 27.80 in January. MFE slipped at the end of 2007, but has moved to the upside since the beginning of this year. Security software maker McAfee announced yesterday evening its second-quarter profit dipped to $47.8 million, hurt by hefty charges and a legal settlement. The company posted earnings of 52 cents per share, while analysts forecast earnings of 45 cents per share. Revenue climbed to $396.8 million, just above analysts' view for $369.1 million in sales. Technical indicators for the stock are bearish and steady while S&P gives MFE a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

McAfee has declared its intentions to acquire data loss prevention company Reconnex for US$46 million. Commenting on this deal, Dave DeWalt, CEO and president, McAfee, said, "Data protection is the number one concern of chief information security officer's, but today's DLP solutions take too long to deploy and obtain results. With the pending acquisition of Reconnex, McAfee expects to redefine the entire data protection market. We expect that this will enable us to leapfrog other data protection vendors and to reinforce our position as the largest dedicated security company."

Today the Linux world broke out the champagne to celebrate VMware joining the Linux Foundation. I agree. It's good news. What it doesn't resolve is the allegation that VMware is in active and conscious violation of the GPL. Some of these allegations appear to be well-founded. VMware's lack of response to the allegations is not golden, especially in light of its embrace of the Linux Foundation.
