Fake MP3 Files New Hiding Place for Trojan Adware

McAfee is reporting a large uptick in the number of Trojan adware installs via bogus MP3 files on file sharing networks. Masquerading as audio files with real-sounding names, the Trojans install adware on users' PCs. Once someone tries to open the files, they are asked to sign an end-user agreement and then the program installs two Trojan files - NetNucleus and Mirar. Once installed, the infected machines start serving up popup ads. Over the last 24 hours, McAfee reports that nearly one third of all McAfee clients reporting results back to the company have detected these files.

HP on Monday is announcing the contribution of its Tru64 Unix Advanced File System (AdvFS) source code to the Linux community, offering capabilities in uptime, security, and improved performance of Linux file systems, the company said. AdvFS will be donated as a reference implementation of an enterprise Linux file system. Code will be made available under the General Public License Version 2 for compatibility with the Linux kernel, HP said.

McAfee Monday outlined a strategy to extend its antivirus product line into the areas of offline virtual images, SAP's NetWeaver, as well as storage systems from EMC and Sun Microsystems . McAfee plans to roll out versions of its Windows server-based VirusScan Enterprise software for these three areas by the end of next month that will work by residing next to protected data assets to scan for viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, botnets, and rootkits, according to Malav Patel, McAfee group product marketing manager.

Apparently it is, and a new report published by McAfee confirms that certain TLDs are more dangerous to visit, on average, than others. In particular, they flagged 3 TLDs as exceptionally dangerous, with two to three times the percentage of dangerous sites as others. McAfee lists the .hk, .cn and .info TLDs as the most dangerous, with .hk being the most dangerous of all. Of all the sites queried in .hk, more than 19% were flagged as dangerous or “potentially dangerous” (whatever that means), compared to 11.8% of .cn domains and 11.7% of .info domains. This is all compared to .com, which ranked at only 5% - but, as it is the most popular TLD, the numbers may be diluted.
