Lithuanian Web Sites Met with Cyber Attack: related news

Lithuanian Web Sites Met with Cyber Attack

During the weekend in Lithuania, Web sites of government agencies, political parties and businesses were defaced with the hammer-and-sickle symbol and five-pointed stars, as well as derisive and profane anti-Lithuanian slogans, said Rytis Rainys, a Lithuanian official. Most of the Web sites were restored by Monday.

Russian cyber attacks crippled Georgian Web sites: Internet firm

Computers in Russia launched intense cyber attacks on Georgian government Web sites while Moscow's military struck in the former Soviet state, a U. S. Internet firm said yesterday. It was not clear if the cyber assaults were orchestrated by the Russian government, organized crime, "hacktivists" or others. Tom Burling, a Tulip Systems executive in San Francisco, said numbers identifying computers on the Internet show machines in Russia were used to attack Web sites for Georgia's presidency and a major television network. Tulip took over hosting for those Web sites on Saturday, a day after Russian forces poured into Georgia after Tbilisi attacked a Moscow-backed rebel province. The distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks began in the weeks running up to the outbreak of the Russia-Georgia conflict and continued on Tuesday after the Krem

Is Today's Web Still 'the Web'?

snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister raises questions regarding the transforming nature of the Web now that Tim Berners-Lee's early vision has been supplanted by today's much more complex model. AJAX, Google Web Toolkit, Flash and Silverlight all have McAllister asking, 'Is [the Web] still the Web if you can't navigate directly to specific content? Is it still the Web if the content can't be indexed and searched? Is it still the Web if you can only view the application on certain clients or devices? Is it still the Web if you can't view source?' Such questions bely a much bigger question for Web developers, McAllister writes. If today's RIAs no longer resemble the 'Web,' then should we be shoehorning these apps into the Web's infrastructure, or is the problem that the client platforms simply aren't evolving fast enough to meet

Top Torrent Sites According to Google - Mininova tops the list of favorite torrent sites

A report today over at TorrentFreak takes a look at the way that Google ranks Torrent sites and finds that Google’s information seems comparable to that reported by the sites themselves which hasn’t always been the case when looking at Alexa rankings for the sites. Using Google, it was determined that Mininova is the most popular Torrent site and The Pirate Bay comes in second. Rankings indicate that Torrentz and Isohunt compete closely for third place and then there are a handful of other torrent sites that also rank fairly high although the popularity of these sites varies between countries. The stats also indicate that Torrent sharing via all of these sites is on the rise.

Anatomy of a cyber war

In the wake of the Russian-Georgian conflict, a week worth of speculations around Russian Internet forums have finallyRussian vs Georgia Cyber Attack materialized into a coordinated cyber attack against Georgia’s Internet infrastructure. The attacks have already managed to compromise several government web sites, with continuing DDoS attacks against numerous other Georgian government sites, prompting the government to switch to hosting locations to the U.S, with Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs undertaking a desperate step in order to disseminate real-time information by moving to a Blogspot account.

New SQL Injection Attack Fuses Malware, Phishing

PainMeds tips a recent post in Secure Computing's research blog describing a new SQL injection attack that had infected thousands of MSSQL-based web servers by last weekend, turning them into malware delivery systems. The attack apparently rewrites the server's Web pages to include JavaScript which pushes malware to the visitor as if it were from the genuine site. Sites using Sybase might possibly be vulnerable, as it uses the same exploited syntax that MSSQL does. The post includes an example of the attack. Unlike most malware attacks, this one appears to originate from the site the user is actually visiting. From the blog: "'Similar to phishing, this attack takes advantage of the website visitor's trust in the site they are visiting. Instead of phishing for information, however, malware is sent to the client, which the client has a high

Newly-found hybrid attack embeds Java applet in GIF file

Researchers at NGSSoftware have developed a hybrid attack capable of hiding itself within an image and intend to present details on the exploit at the Black Hat security conference next week. New and esoteric attacks are part and parcel of what Black Hat is about, but this particular vector could target web sites with a particularly vulnerable population: MySpace and Facebook. Social networking web sites tend to attract younger users, and while this particular attack can be used in a variety of ways, embedding the hook in profile photos that are then seeded and targeted at the teen crowd could be a very effective tactic.

The Wisdom of Crowds Meets the Wisdom of Authors: How XML Enables the Semantic Web

I recently attended the first-ever Linked Data Planet conference, where a number of pioneers in the field of Semantic Web shared their perspectives on the state of the art — and business — of helping the world tag their web pages for meaning. So what is the Semantic Web and how is it different from the web of today? On the web, most search engines today use key words and the number of links to a page to determine the relevance of search results. This is the wisdom of crowds at work: If the key words you are searching for occur often on that page, and the page is popular (i.e. lots of links to it), then it is probably the best bet for what you are searching for. The downside of this approach is that it infers meaning of the page. On the Semantic Web, the crowds get wiser thanks to the wisdom of authors, who can let the crowds know —

Web Browser Wars Go Mobile

alphadogg writes "A new generation of mobile Web browsers is finally making the Web a reality on handheld devices. The latest example is last week's beta launch of Opera Mobile 9.5, a native Web browser for high-end smartphones. It's an evolutionary release for the Norwegian software company, but it comes just days after Apple's iPhone 3G, with its highly capable Safari browser, went on sale. Other brand-new entrants, such as Mobile Firefox and Skyfire, are expected later this year, at least in beta form. But the evolving mobile browsers are only one part of the picture. Mobile browsing is affected by the client hardware, ranging from the processor to the kind of wireless network being used, all of which have improved markedly. It's also affected by the design of Web sites being targeted, and there's new attention being focused on optimiz

A Web 2.0 Makeover for Online Stores

As many e-commerce sites celebrate their 10th birthday, web stores are facing the reality that the Internet is changing and current sites need to be refurbished. From left-hand navigation and search to product catalog and product detail, from the cart and check out to the general design and format - most sites are in desperate need of a makeover. With changes in web innovation being accompanied by drastic changes in the economy, no major vertical has more to gain than e-commerce.

Web Browser Wars: Google Looking Beyond Market Share

With the advent of Google's (GOOG) foray into Web browsers with Google Chrome, we have yet another contender for the title of Web Browser King. If you're not a die-hard web user this may not seem like a great title. Some Web browsers are better than others, yes, but these browsers are free anyway, so what's the point if one is more popular than another. Believe it or not, the business of Web browsers is pretty important, not to mention occasionally profitable. The popular websites of today may also be the operating systems of tomorrow.

How to Develop Web Applications with Ajax: Part 1

In the past, web applications were limited because a web page had to be reloaded (or another page loaded in its place) in order for new data to be obtained. Other methods were available (without loading another page), but the techniques weren’t well supported and had a tendency to be buggy. In recent months, a technique that had not been widely supported in the past has become available to a large number of web surfers, giving developers more freedom to develop cutting-edge web applications. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as “Ajax applications” (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be us
