What's next in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (part 2) (Red Hat Magazine)

One of the most requested features since the release of Enterprise Linux 5 is encrypted device support. We support encrypted devices via a technology called LUKS. LUKS, implemented on top of the existing device-mapper cryptography code, standardizes the partition header for the automatic detection of encrypted devices. It also allows for multiple passphrases to decrypt the device. For example, if I insert an encrypted USB stick, the encrypted device is detected via HAL, the GNOME file manager prompts me for the passphrase, and LUKS unlocks the device-which is then mounted and ready to use.

Encrypted Traffic No Longer Safe From Throttling

coderrr writes "New research could allow ISPs to selectively block or slow down your encrypted traffic even if they cannot snoop on your transmitted data. Italian researchers have found a way to categorize the type of traffic that is hidden inside an encrypted SSH session to around 90% accuracy. They are achieving this by analyzing packet sizes and inter-packet intervals instead of looking at the content itself. Challenges remain for ISPs to implement this technology, but it's clear that encrypting your traffic inside an SSH session or VPN connection is not a solution to protect net neutrality."

McCain Releases Technology Platform

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "John McCain has finally released a technology platform. Most of it is the same old stuff; lower corporate taxes, protect children from porn, and avoid Internet regulation unless 'necessary.' Alas, in his view, helping the RIAA's War on Sharing is necessary to stop the 'global epidemic' of piracy, while Net Neutrality is something he 'does not believe in.' Ars Technica has a review of McCain's platform." A brief analysis is also available from Federal Computer Week. In addition to the technology policy, McCain has also released a paper describing his stance on security and privacy. We've previously contrasted his views with those of Barack Obama. Obama's technology policies are also available online.

The repair process involves use of a diode laser, a robot and a delivery system to inject a surfacing compound into the laser's eye. The technology may also be useful in the aerospace and defence sectors. Hardwear, the company designated the task of commercialising the technology, signed a contract with AGL Energy in 2007

High Touch Trumps High Tech When Switching Online Bill Payments

While US banks have successfully leveraged technology to simplify the account opening process, little progress has been made in using technology to help new customers easily move their online bill payment info over from their existing bank. The technology solutions that exist today merely substitute one online process for another. When switching banks, bill pay users will benefit more from hand-holding during and after account opening than they would from these automated online switching tools. eBusiness executives will see better bill pay activation results from new checking account customers by focusing on in-branch efforts and employee incentives.
