The Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers of a rash of identity theft scams where thieves try to steal personal information by promising tax benefits or threatening penalties. The tax agency said taxpayers reported almost 700 attempted incidents of identity theft, or phishing, in May and June alone.

A recent phishing scam targeting users of Apple Inc.'s .Mac and MobileMe online services has successfully duped hundreds into divulging credit card and other personal information, a security company saidy. According to Dan Clements, the president of CardCops, the identity protection division of California-based Affinion Group Inc., the phishing campaign scammed between 100 and 200 people with mac.com addresses in just one day.

Last year I had to disconnect and ring the operator to break the connection to an overseas premium rate call when I accepted a reversed charges call after hearing a faint voice cry help, before the operator cut in. On Friday, Aug. 22, a new round of phishing scam messages has targeted the University of Arkansas e-mail accounts. These scams claimed to originate from University Police and indicated that the recipient’s account would be closed due to a system error. Further, the message asked users to reply with their e-mail address and password.

PainMeds tips a recent post in Secure Computing's research blog describing a new SQL injection attack that had infected thousands of MSSQL-based web servers by last weekend, turning them into malware delivery systems. The attack apparently rewrites the server's Web pages to include JavaScript which pushes malware to the visitor as if it were from the genuine site. Sites using Sybase might possibly be vulnerable, as it uses the same exploited syntax that MSSQL does. The post includes an example of the attack. Unlike most malware attacks, this one appears to originate from the site the user is actually visiting.
