I’m happy to announce that our open source community and projects web site exadel.org is now live. It also hosts its first project: JavaFX plug-in for Eclipse. Why did we create this web site? Exadel always had a number of projects available on its site for download, most of them are free. One of the biggest challenges for users was to get involved. Even though most products were open source, it wasn’t easy to get the source code. The actual download was hosted on exadel.com, support forum for each project was hosted on Google Groups, and there was no way to enter any bugs. There was a big disconnect. exadel.org will try to solve all this, it will provide everything you would expect from man open source site and community. Everything is integrated now, you get product download, source code, forum and Jira to enter bugs.

Following last month’s acquisition of reMail by Google, developer Gabor Cselle announced today that he has released the reMail code under an open source license as he will be focusing on other projects at Google. After purchasing reMail, Google decided to discontinue the application and remove it from the App Store, although existing users who had already purchased the app were able to continue using it. Cselle writes in his blog that he has open sourced the code because he is passionate about mobile e-mail, and hopes “that developers interested in making email-related apps can use reMail code as a starting point.” The source code for reMail is now available on Google Code as remail-iphone under the Apache 2.0 License.

If you think open-source server technologies are limited to Linux distributions, think again. Although these software projects pair well with Linux, it isn't an integral part of any of the 10 listed. Open-source software no longer refers to a Linux-only environment. In fact, open source now crosses all operating system boundaries, so much so, that Microsoft launched its own open-source laboratory called Port 25, and it is a platinum-level sponsor of the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco. To introduce you to 10 hot server-oriented open-source technologies you need to know, I compiled a diverse list of projects and applications for you to discover and explore. Many of these products are free of cost or close to it.

Hackers who instigated attacks on Google and other companies operating in China stole valuable computer source code by breaking into personal computers owned by workers with privileged access, Reuters reported, citing George Kurtz, chief technology officer at McAfee. Kurtz said the hackers targeted a small number of employees who controlled source code management systems. Google said in January that it and a number of other corporations had been infiltrated by a group of hackers operating out of China. Beijing has maintained that claims that Google was attacked by China-based hackers as "groundless."

rim blackberry slider 303x500The talk of a BlackBerry slider smartphone continues to bubble, and BGR’s sources reckon they have some fresh information on the matter. Â The in-development device is apparently a portrait-orientation slider, more similar to the Palm Pre in form-factor than it is to the more common side-sliding QWERTY handsets, and it’s likely to have a touchscreen along with the pull-out ‘board. Â In fact the source reckons this particular BlackBerry is what the ongoing Magnum/Dakota project – which paired a keyboard, touchscreen and optical joystick – evolved into.
