ElcomSoft Breaks Wi-Fi Encryption Faster With GPU Acceleration

MOSCOW, October 9 /PRNewswire/ -- ElcomSoft Co. Ltd. accelerates the recovery of WPA and WPA2 encryption used in the Wi-Fi protocol by employing the new-generation NVIDIA video cards. ElcomSoft patent-pending GPU acceleration technology implemented in Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery allows using laptop, desktop or server computers equipped with supported NVIDIA video cards to break Wi-Fi encryption up to 100 times faster than by using CPU only.

Hackers Use Nvidia Graphics Card to Smash Wi-Fi Encryption 10,000 Percent Faster

Here's one way to tap the parallel processing power in Nvidia's graphics cards: Wi-Fi security hacking. Russian hackers reportedly bored through WPA and WPA2 encryptions using a brute-force technique juiced with one of Nvidia's latest graphics cards (they don't say which ones) The card supposedly made the "password recovery" process up to 10,000 percent faster. The report's notably skimpy on the details, but if true, that's a whole lot of busted for Wi-Fi security. [SC via DSL Reports]

GPUs used to break Wi-Fi encryption

The latest graphics cards have been used to break Wi-Fi encryption far quicker than was previously possible. Some security consultants are already suggesting the development blows Wi-Fi security out of the water and that corporations ought to apply tighter VPN controls, or abandon wireless networks altogether, in response.

Boingo Wireless comments on AT&T acquisition of Wayport

AT&T has announced that it is acquiring Wayport Inc. to expand its Wi-Fi footprint. The Boingo Wireless CEO Dave Hagan: "From an industry perspective, it's great that AT&T sees Wi-Fi as a great complement to 3G networks. Carriers should bundle Wi-Fi with 3G to provide a better user experience and offload expensive data usage to cheaper, faster Wi-Fi networks. At Boingo, we have seen carriers and cable companies moving quickly to assure they have a Wi-Fi service offering; naturally, that leads to the kind of industry consolidation exemplified by AT&T buying Wayport, our own acquisition of both Concourse Communications and Sprint's Wi-Fi network."

Google Further Refines 'MyLocation' With Wi-Fi

The latest version of Google Maps and Google Maps for Mobile can use Wi-Fi to determine location information. The premise is similar to what Google does with cell tower information. The signals transmitted by nearby Wi-Fi access points are used to pinpoint location. Since the range of a Wi-Fi access point is smaller than that of a cell phone tower, this often results in a much more accurate position. The new feature works with BlackBerry devices for now, but support for the HTC G1 Android phone and other platforms will be added soon.

In-Stat Publishes Research on Wi-Fi in Consumer Electronics

Because of its large installed base in mobile PCs and home networks, flexibility, and mature ecosystem, Wi-Fi is a valued, "Swiss army knife" technology for the consumer electronic (CE) market reports In-Stat. According to research from the high-tech market research firm, "Digital TV will be the second largest category of CE stationary devices shipping with Wi-Fi," says Victoria Fodale, In-Stat analyst. "The sheer volume of digital TV shipments will make it a strong market, despite a relatively low Wi-Fi attach rate."

WPA Wi-Fi encryption partially cracked

The Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption standard has been partially cracked by security researchers Erik Tews and Martin Beck, according to a Thursday report. The pair will demonstrate and discuss their accomplishment at the PacSec conference in Tokyo next week. The attack allows the hacker to read data sent from the router to a laptop computer and send inaccurate information to connected clients. Beck has reportedly found a way to break the crack the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key used by the WPA standard in about less than 15 minutes, which is the shortest amount of time such an attack can be performed to date.

WPA Wi-Fi Encryption Is Partially Cracked - Though only partially....

Given that WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) can be compromised in a matter of minutes, many people now use WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)on their wireless routers. But security researchers now say they've developed a way to partially crack WPA, according to InfoWorld. Researchers have found a way to break the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key used by WPA in a matter of twelve to fifteen minutes. They have not yet managed to crack the encryption keys used to secure data that goes from the PC to the router.

Encryption Best Practices: Protecting Backed Up Data

Encrypting backed up data is increasingly becoming a priority, and developing procedures to easily manage encryption helps reinforce the data's security. The encryption types most commonly used, for example to secure commercial transactions over the Internet, are handled without requiring the user to know the encryption key. This kind of encryption, asymmetric encryption that uses a public key authority, is the most commonly used in protecting data. To protect data one has backed up, symmetric encryption is preferable because the key is created, stored, and deleted locally, so the user backing up the data has control over the key.

Researcher cracks WPA Wi-Fi encryption in 15 minutes

Folks breaking into WEP-encrypted Wi-Fi networks has become a fact of life. That's why most knowledgeable users rely on WPA or WPA2 encryption systems instead. Bad news, though: PC World reports that a pair of security researchers have found a way to break into WPA networks in a frighteningly short amount of time.

Hacked! Wi-Fi Security Cracked, Tool to Be Released

Beware the security measures taken when it comes to Wi-Fi: From now on, “multilayer” might be the effect to go for. That’s because two researchers in Germany have cracked the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption used by wireless routers. And, they plan to issue a tool next week to help other people crack it too.

Elcomsoft Claims WPA/WPA2 Cracking Breakthrough

secmartin writes "Russian security firm Elcomsoft has released software that uses Nvidia GPUs to speed up the cracking of WPA and WPA2 keys by a factor of 100. Since the software allows them to network thousands of PCs, this anouncement effectively signals the death of wireless networking in business networks; any network handling sensitive data should start using VPN encryption on machines connecting over Wi-Fi networks, or stop using these networks altogether."

Eye-Fi Software Update Adds Support for Flickr, Twitter, RSS

Eye-Fi keeps kicking ass with their wireless SD cards, adding upload support for Flickr and feed publishing capabilities through Twitter and RSS — all in a software update. It was only a few weeks ago that another downloadable upgrade boosted download speeds and threw in MobileMe support, albeit for a fee. Owners should get an Eye-Fi Manager Software update pushed through automatically, and new customers can now find the cards on the Eye-Fi website. Note to other hardware manufacturers: DO MORE STUFF LIKE THIS. [Eye-Fi via Crave]
