W3C Publishes XML Signature Best Practices First Public Draft

The XML Security Working Group has published the First Public Working Draft of XML Signature Best Practices. The XML Signature specification offers powerful and flexible mechanisms to support a variety of use cases. This flexibility has the downside of increasing the number of possible attacks. One countermeasure to the increased number of threats is to follow best practices, including a simplification of the use of XML Signature where possible. This document outlines best practices noted by the XML Security Specifications Maintenance Working Group, the XML Security Working Group, and other ideas cited at the Workshop on Next Steps for XML Security. While most of these best practices are related to improving security and mitigating attacks, yet others are for best practices in the practical use of XML Signature, such as signing XML that d

IG: Effectiveness of DOT IT security practices declines

The Transportation Department’s information security program and practices are not effective, the department’s inspector general said recently in audit findings done to comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act. Although some operational improvements have been made, in overall terms, the IG said the department’s security and privacy program and practices continued to decline. Last year, the program and practices eroded because “management had to divert resources and attention to resolving headquarters move-related issues,” Calvin Scovel III, DOT's inspector general, said in a report released Oct. 14. DOT has not fully implemented Scovel’s recommendations from last year, he said.

Google Tacks On 10 More Years To E-Mail Archiving Program

Aimed at businesses that need to retain and store e-mail, Google has added 10 more years to its e-mail archiving service, Google Message Discover. "Regulations and guidelines like the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure put pressure on IT organizations to ensure that e-mail is properly retained and can be reliably located and preserved in the event of legal discovery," Google said in a company blog. "Coupled with the growing importance of e-mail as a store of intellectual property, e-mail archiving has become both legally necessary and critical to the operation of your business."

Don't forget security

One of the things people often forget when deciding what hosting provider to choose is security. Security is a critical part of the hosting system - if their system is not secure, then your website won't be secure. And it can be hard enough to protect your site from your own mistakes without having to worry about the security of your host. And before you scoff, even I have been the victim of security breaches, both of my own cause (d'oh!) and from my hosting provider. And security breaches can be hard to clean up, even if they are caught within moments of the break in. The site WebHostingRating.com has a great article on Must-Have Security Features you should look for in your Web hosting provider.

Security Flaw In Android Web Browser

r writes "The New York Times reports on a security flaw discovered in the new Android phones. The article is light on details, but it hints at a security hole in the browser, allowing for trojans to install themselves in the same security partition as the browser: 'The risk in the Google design, according to Mr. Miller, who is a principal security analyst at Independent Security Evaluators in Baltimore, lies in the danger from within the Web browser partition in the phone. It would be possible, for example, for an intruder to install software that would capture keystrokes entered by the user when surfing to other Web sites. That would make it possible to steal identity information or passwords.'"

IT security: Survey says it's better

For the third consecutive year, a majority of federal decision makers surveyed on cybersecurity say they are more confident about their agency’s information technology security posture now than they were four years ago. A large majority also said they are spending more time each year complying with mandated security requirements. The figures, included in a survey of 223 IT officials in more than 40 civilian and Defense agencies released today by Cisco, seem to indicate that security mandates from Congress and the Office of Management and Budget are focusing on the right things. The top priorities were achieving compliance with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and implementing the president’s Comprehensive National Cyber Security Initiative.

Data privacy, security laws have far-reaching impact

Massachusetts has enacted data privacy and data security regulations that will make it eke out California for the most wide ranging state privacy and security laws -- laws that are likely to impact the policies, practices, procedures, contracts and training used by companies nationwide. The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation determined that there was a significant need for set of comprehensive standards that ensure businesses are taking practical steps to safeguard personal information. [TECHNOLOGY] Spicebird: Open source e-mail done right

Web-based e-mail services may get most of the attention these days, but traditional desktop-based e-mail remains indispensable for most. That¡¦s in part because of history ¡X people are still accustomed to downloading their e-mail into a traditional application ¡X and in part because many have grown dependent upon the additional features that have come to be seen as essential to e-mail programs but are lacking in Web-based e-mail: contact management, calendaring, and more.

Schneier on Security

brothke writes "There is a perception in both the private and government sector, that security, both physical and digital, is something you can buy. Witness the mammoth growth of airport security products following 9/11, and the sheer number of vendors at security conferences. With that, government officials and corporate executives often think you can simply buy products and magically get instant security by flipping on the switch. The reality is that security is not something you can buy; it is something you must get." Keep reading for the rest of Ben's review.

This will mean reviewing all expenditure and squeezing as much value out of suppliers as possible. One area where significant savings can be made is on site security. However, reducing the security spend does not need to mean reducing the quality of service. On the contrary, for those companies still using traditional manned security guards and mobile patrols, switching to Robowatch will actually save money and increase the level of security provision.
