Beware the hacker next door: related news

Beware the hacker next door

After many years in the IT industry I’ve learned that hackers don't always fit the stereotype. According to the FBI, internal hacker attacks make up 70 percent of all security breaches, which means that a hacker is probably sitting in the cubicle next to you, right now.

The Current Development Kernel is...Linux-next?

"Linux-next is a somewhat strange base on which to try to develop, though. It is built anew every day from over 100 subsystem trees, each of which can, itself, change from one day to the next. So linux-next is a moving target, just like the mainline is. But, unlike the mainline, linux-next has no consistent or coherent history. Every day's linux-next tree is a completely new creation with a unique - and transient - history."

Efaflex presents its patented door area surveillan...

EFA-SCAN is the first laser scanner worldwide for doors. The scanner completely captures the whole area in front of the door and intelligently combines motion capturing and reliable door area protection in only one device.Within the dynamic capturing zone EFA-SCAN reacts like a pulse generator. When a moving object or a person is scanned the device reacts within a fraction of a second and the door opens.Geometry and logic of the capturing zone - with a maximum range of 10 x 10 meters - can be freely chosen. The zone can easily be programmed by the user via a simple remote control. EFA-SCAN not only detects movements but also captures their range, direction and speed. The impulse for opening is only transmitted to the door if vehicles or persons move in the direction of the door.

The New and Improved Next-Gen Java Applet Plug-in Technology

Next-Generation Java Plug-in Technology (available in the Java SE 6 Update 10, has breathed new life into Java applet technology for delivering programs over the web. At least that is what Dana Nourie and Kenneth Russell contend in their article entitled "Next Generation in Applet Java Plug-in Technology." Nourie and Russell write that the next-generation Java Plug-in offers a completely redesigned architecture that provides powerful new capabilities to applets in the web browser, while improving the overall reliability and functionality of applets in a backward-compatible manner. Among the benefits one might expect from next-gen applet technology are:

Next iPod Nano Sighting, Plus That iPhone Nano Rumor

Colleague Cliff Edwards, next door on Tech Beat reports having seen a device he theorizes is a next-generation iPod nano, sporting a touch screen. (Sorry no pictures.) He argues pretty convincingly that its a likely change for the fall. I’ve been thinking that the transition to the current nano model, nicknamed “little fatty” had happened too recently for it to be time for a major change to the nano. But then there’s the issue of consistent look and feel. If the iPod touch is now the flagship of the iPod family, and it looks like an iPhone, then shouldn’t the nano also look more like an iPhone as well, and as such sport a touch screen? Makes perfect sense to me.

Next Generation SSDs Delayed Due To Vista

PoliTech notes in a journal entry that "Vista is the gift that just keeps on giving." "Speaking during SanDisk's second-quarter earnings conference call, Chairman and [CEO] Eli Harari said that Windows Vista will present a special challenge for solid state drive makers. 'As soon as you get into Vista applications in notebook and desktop, you start running into very demanding applications because Vista is not optimized for flash memory solid state disk,' he said... 'The next generation controllers need to basically compensate for Vista shortfalls,' he said. 'Unfortunately, (SSDs) performance in the Vista environment falls short of what the market really needs and that is why we need to develop the next generation, which we'll start sampling end of this year, early next year.

The Yin and Yang of the NeXT Spacecraft

Hard and soft. Dark and bright. High and low. Wide and thin. JAXA and NASA. And that's just one spacecraft. Japan's space agency, JAXA and NASA are teaming up to create a new spacecraft to study the extreme environments of the universe. NeXT, which stands for New exploration X-Ray Telescope is a next generation x-ray astronomy satellite currently under development, with launch scheduled in 2013. While Japan will provide the main spacecraft and several instruments, NASA, and in particular the Goddard Space Flight Center just announced they will be adding a new instrument to the spacecraft, the High-Resolution Soft X-Ray Spectrometer (SXS). While the spacecraft's main instrument will be its Hard X-ray Telescope (HXTs) the addition of SXS is just one of several complementary instruments that provide a "yin and yang" aspect to NeXT's explorat

Fun patent of the day

In one implementation, pressing a Page Down or Page Up keyboard key/button allows a user to begin at any starting vertical location within a page, and navigate to that same location on the next or previous page. For example, if a user is viewing a page starting in a viewing area from the middle of that page and ending at the bottom, a Page Down command will cause the next page to be shown in the viewing area starting at the middle of the next page and ending at the bottom of the next page.

TorrentSpy Hacker Spied on The Pirate Bay for MPAA - Illegally obtained information cost the MPAA a lot of money

The MPAA has gone to extreme lengths to obtain information on illegal filesharing in an effort to shut down popular BitTorrent sites. This included paying $15,000 to a hacker to illegally retrieve information about TorrentSpy that ultimately assisted the MPAA in a court case leading to TorrentSpys demise. New information indicates that the MPAA was also paying this same hacker for information about Swedish BitTorrent tracker The Pirate Bay.
