The discovery of a massive virus that suffers from another virus has reignited debate over whether the microscopic agents of infection should be considered living things rather than bags of genes.

I have Webroot Antivirus with Anti-Spyware, and it is currently running a sweep. The problem is that it seems to be scanning porn-related files that I can’t find on my PC. I don’t LOOK at porn, and don’t know where they could have come from. They appear to be saved in a folder called C:\docs & settings\user\!\PORN NAMES. I can not find the “!” folder. What’s more, something is making my computer REALLY slow. The sweep has also detected a virus titled Troj/Agent-HEG. The sweep has found this virus in the past, and when I remove it, it comes back about two weeks later. Please help me to (a) get the porn off my computer (if it’s even there) and (b) remove the virus for good. I’m hoping these two actions will speed my PC up again! Thanks for all your help! Molly

In the mid 1970's (about '74 or '75) a friend, Chuck Huffington, described to me a program purported to have been unleashed on the ARPAnet - a batch job whose sole purpose was to submit replicas of itself to other compatible systems (CDC Cyber's, perhaps) that it could identify on the net. The clever invention was named "Virus". According to Chuck, some SysAdmin somewhere had then written a similar program/job, the sole functions of were to replicate itself onto compatible systems, look around for instances of "Virus", evict them, and then evict itself. I was never sure at the time whether the story was true or a clever piece of science fiction, but the term "virus" was definitely in use in this context by 1975.

KentuckyFC writes "X-ray crystallography has been a workhorse for chemists since the 1940s and 50s, revealing the 3D structure of complex biological molecules such as haemoglobin, DNA and insulin. But the technique has a severe limitation: it only works with molecules that form into crystals and that turns out to be a tiny fraction of the proteins that make up living things. But today, a team of US researchers say they have created the first image of a single uncrystallized virus using x-ray diffraction. The trick is to take a diffraction pattern of the virus and then subtract the diffraction pattern of its surroundings (abstract). The breakthrough paves the way for scientists to start teasing apart the 3D structures of the many proteins that have eluded biologists to date.

Detailed in the journal Nature, the research reveals the shape of the Ebola virus spike protein, which is necessary for viral entry into human cells, bound to an immune system antibody acting to neutralize the virus. The structure provides a major step forward in understanding how the deadly virus works, and may be useful in the development of potential Ebola virus vaccines, or treatments for those infected.

The North American market has been the stronghold of Xbox 360. It was out far before the competition and as a native company many found Microsoft's new video game console to be a trustworthy product. Xbox 360 has been the most sold console in the USA since the launch, but Nintendo has ended that era according to NDP Research. After only 20 months on the market it has sold 10.9 million Nintendo Wii consoles throughout the USA. This is just thousands more than the number of Xbox 360 consoles sold in the USA, which has been on the market for 32 months. I think we can conclude that Nintendo was right not to get involved in the tech war between Microsoft and Sony.

javipas writes "GPLv3 and LGPLv3 were released one year ago, on 29 June 2007. Palamida, who tracks Open Source projects, has made a study of the current situation of these licenses along with AGPLv3, which was released later, in November. The number of projects that have made the transition to these licenses has grown over the last months, and it seems than AGPLv3 has captured a great interest lately. Black Duck Software, a company that tracks Open Source projects too, has made its own study with similar results, and although GPLv3 and its variants have a good adoption rate, the interviews published on the Palamida site (Stallman, Chris Di Bona) show that the acceptance of GPLv3 has still a long way to walk."
